Was a project and still is one. He'll probably end up being a decent offensive big. Now if he doesn't learn to play defense will decide how long his career will be.

Not to derail the thread with taboo Monty love, but one of the ways Monty made Austin earn his playing time this year was on the defensive end of the floor. Monty has at least instilled in Austin the confidence that he is at worst an above average defender and at best a defensive specialist on this team.

I've said it before, but how many young guards take playing defense as seriously as Rivers does? I hope that's something he never loses, because that is a unique characteristic that sets him apart from the modern young guard.

The kid has so many intangibles that you just can't teach. Just to provide examples that can't be misconstrued:

- Competitiveness (slumped over at midcourt after Conley hits the game winner over Aminu when Aminu switched)
- Toughness (getting in a thug like Reggie Evans face after elbowing AD)
- Durability (how has he not missed time this year after he hits the deck on virtually every drive?)
- Work ethic (there's many stories out there from Monty having to drag him out of the gym to him getting impatient and threatening to find a gym in Boston during a flight delay)

He's still being molded. He's still young. There's no reason to lose faith in the kid until he appears that he isn't improving, which has not been the case this season.

Ik that Monty sees this, but really hope that Dell will see this as well and won't deal him this offseason. The value he has on this team is more than we can get in the trade market for him imo because they do not know his work ethic like we do.

I really think he can be in our "finishing 5" next year when Gordon is delt unless we pick up a shooter at SF. He loves to play in the clutch times of the game (ex. buzzer beater at Duke and I am pretty sure he has talked about it) and i can see him with that quickness next year being able to drive to the rim and kick or finish with AD there for the put back if he misses at the end of the games in the isolation. And he also isn't a liability behind the arc now (and will probably improve that this offseason) if we need Tyreke to do his thing as well with space.

I think being drafted by the Blazers is the kiss of death for young talent, unless you're ready to start from day one. They've done nothing to develop their young talent and let them waste away on the bench before releasing them. Obviously I'm not talking about players like batum and Lillard who were ready to start from day 1, but players like Will Barton, Babbitt, Nolan Smith, Elliott Williams, Victor Claver, the list goes on. Send them to Europe for some seasoning or something.

He didn't drop because people thought he was too short to translate, he dropped because the medical red flags kept escalating as we approached the draft. Would you really spend a top 10 pick on a big that you just learned needs back surgery? This isn't a broken leg we're talking about.

Batum was extremely raw and certainly was not ready from day 1. He's developed a TON in Portland.

Toronto was trying SO hard to move out of #8... i can remember just yelling at the screen.... swing for the fences

"Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo "tried hard" to move down in the draft, but most offers involved trading out of the draft entirely, which he didn't want to do, says Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun "

Terrance Ross would have been there at 10 for them, there was no danger of them missing out on him...

we should have moved ahead of Detroit and taken Andre Drummond...

i am one of those that was screaming for him over Thomas Robinson if we hadn't gotten number 1...and he fell to 4 or 5...

i think we really had the chance to move up 2 spaces and get him... but Monty loved Austin so damn much...

if we had offered 2012 1.10, 2012 2nd, and 2013 2nd for 1.8 to take Drummond... i think they would have taken it and done backflips...

Austin, Darius and Pierre, sorry, not sorry.

had the chance to pair AD23 and AD1... and we blew it. YOU IDIOTS!

Be glad Drummond was drafted 9th. I don't believe Demps would have drafted Drummond if he was there. I bet Rivers would still be the pick.

I'm tired of molding Rivers. They've pretty much destroyed his pre-NBA game. He may be a different player now but his game is still very flawed.

So you're judging it all on something that MAYBE(and i highly stress this) we could've done?

I doubt they would've taken a deal that's 2 picks later and 2 second rounders.

We probably did offer something similar but got shot down

You just never know

I'd say he's made a ton of progress

Remember how young he was/is and the situation he was forced in.

Sullinger was an easy top 10 player and probably even top 5 without the health concerns. One leg is longer than the other.

Sully had the back surgery and is doing well now, I thought.

Are you just saying that he will break down eventually?

He is becoming a really good player.

Hmmm . . . maybe he'll be our Jannero Pargo, a la 2007-08.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking Lamb over Rivers is a no-brainer. I don't think Lamb is 6'7, but he's got incredible length for whatever he is. His arms are scary long.

He can shoot the 3 AND he is an incredible perimeter defender.

It's absolutely a no-brainer.
