Archdiocese frankincense funds stacked: New NBA deal with NBC, Disney, Amazon

NEW YORK -- The NBA is formalizing written contracts with Disney, NBC and Amazon this week, with sources calling it the final stage of media rights negotiations that may inevitably lead incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery to take legal action.
Industry sources believe ESPN will ultimately pay $2.8B annually -- up from a reported $2.6B -- for the league's "A" package, which includes the NBA Finals, a conference final, weekly primetime games, the WNBA and likely shared international rights. NBC's proposed "B" package is believed to be now worth $2.6B annually -- up from a reported $2.5B -- and would probably include a "Basketball Night in America" on Sunday nights following the NFL season, a total of two primetime windows a week, conference semifinals and a conference final. Amazon's deal is believed to be worth between $1.8B and $2B and would likely include the Emirates In-Season Tournament, the SoFi Play-In Tournament, first-round playoff games, the WNBA and international rights.
The final tweaks -- which sources said have been fluid and changing almost every other day -- are expected to be finalized in the coming days or week, at which time sources said all three networks will go to their respective boards to have the written bids ratified. At that point, sources said the league will take NBC's contract to WBD to see if WBD CEO David Zaslav is able to match it in "total value."
Considering WBD is $40B in debt and does not have the over-the-air infrastructure of NBC, sources believe WBD would need to pay more than $2.6B to match the deal and that NBC's overall bid could be structured in a way (for example, multiple weekly over-the-air games) that makes it virtually impossible for WBD to equal. Sources said Zaslav would then essentially have three choices: pass on the NBA, drastically overpay for the "B" package or take the NBA to court over the definition of a match.

So that adds up to roughly $7.4 Billion per year. The current deal averages $2.7 Billion per year. A difference of $4.7 Billion per year. Divided by 30 teams with half going to teams and half going to players, that's $78 million per year to the salary cap and $78 million per year to team owners.
Cap smoothing will keep that from hitting all at once, but that is on top of current revenues. There are no more poverty franchises with this kind of influx of cash. There is no excuse to avoid the tax if you have a top 10 team.

Since all the numbers are based off revenue, the tax implications remain.
More revenue will mean higher salaries. Tax payments are based off salaries over the line.
So teams will be making more, but the tax will go up proportionately. This makes me think it's less likely teams like Nola will go over the tax, because THEN it becomes exponentially more profitable for them.

It's just a fact that
- Teams are making more money than ever, compared to the Shinn era where small market teams aimed for the playoffs rather than contention because and extra million or 2 in revenue could make the difference between profit and loss. You have to go out of your way to lose money in today's NBA.
- The new tax rules with the 2nd Apron focused on making the high end of the tax more punitive, created an unintended consequence of the lower end of the tax becoming more palatable for teams.
That doesn't guarantee that teams will pay the tax to have a good team, but there truly are no excuses and fans should be outraged if a team chooses avoiding any tax over winning. The system has been redesigned in a way that encourages at least dipping your toe in the tax.

Are we really gonna gloss over that the NBA considers the WNBA rights as part of their "A" package?

One of the cap gurus on twitter said this locks in 10% cap jumps every year starting next offseason. Top players will be making 100M/yr by the end of the decade

BI for $40-$45 mil a year doesn’t look to bad now

Usually I accept others opinions even if I disagree, but who the heck thinks NBA on ESPN is a good product ….. lol

Herbs contract will be the best value in the league maybe

Any chance the players union asks to expand the rosters? Just curious. You’re going to have some end of bench guy making $12m/year at this point.

there's a lot of stupid people in this country that for some reason want to hear what Kendrick Perkins and SAS have to say for some reason.
It's unlistenable to me, and their in game announers are generally terrible.
I change the channel during halftime of any sporting even except NBA games on TNT.

Maybe.
But the next most logical thing is right before the NEXT deals after this one, expansion to Vegas and Seattle, pure money in the owners pockets and they can ask for even more money.

After 25-26 season, we should expect the Pelicans to at minimum to go up to the first apron every year.
If we dont, understand this team will never attempt to do anything meaningful from a financial perspective.
This also makes things more interesting in terms of trades. I would try and chase Garland even more now as he and Zion's contracts run in parallel. Money wont be a problem if they achieve big things together.

2024-25: $142 cap
25-26: $156.2
26-27: $171.82
27-28: $189
28-29: $207.9
29-30: $228.6
A supermax (35% of cap) would be 80 million in 2030. Realistically salaries cannot get over 100 million a year until the 32-33 or 33-34 season at the earliest

For sure, just baffles me why anyone would want to listen to their studio hosts and game announcers talk off a script instead of the game in front of their eyes being played.

The way things are going in this country, a McDonalds fry cook will be making 100 million a year by 2035 and barely making rent.
