I can’t wait until the Lakers have to play back to backs on the road.

The Lakers started out 5-3 last year and still landed us pick #8. This year they are 0-4 and their next 7 games are Timberwolves, Nuggets, Pelicans, Jazz, Cavs, Jazz, Clippers.

So, no matter what, we have a pick swap with them? I guess the only way this gets fricked is if they trade the pick to a better team outside the lottery?

At what point does Pelinka and Buss say there’s no reason to trade the picks this year?

Have to think it’s close, they’re falling WAYY behind, and they’ve already said they’re not going to trade them unless they feel it would make them a contender.

While on this subject, would anyone be amenable to altering our trade with them in the off-season? Say a star comes available ( I’ll use SGA as an example), if we would alter our trade they could realistically have 4 picks to trade.

Remove the 24/25 deferment and just take the 24 1st for swap rights in 25 and 27. That frees them up to trade 23, 26, 28, 30 picks.

Not sure if 2 additional pick swaps would be worth it being they could be getting a high piece, but betting on them bungling it would be a good bet.

Nope.

We swap spots with them regardless of who owns the pick.

But they can’t even trade the pick without owning someone’s 23 or 24 first besides this one due to the Stepien rule.

They’re fricked.

Just to recap…

They received Toní.

We basically netted DD, BI, CJ (rip Josh), and 3 more potential top 10 picks.

Do I have that right?

Something like that.

We likely get a top 5 pick swap this year and then we get a pick outright in 24 or 25.

The date of when we have to decide on 24 or 25 isn’t set but it likely won’t be until after the lottery. And if the Lakers are as godawful next year as they are this one, I don’t see deferring to 5.

Let's not forget that we also got the #4 overall pick and turned it into two non-NBA players.

We got a great haul but really mismanaged most of it

Article in SI this am about this. Basically says they can't make a trade using a '23 1st until draft night, and that Pelinka may wait until them because for a short window he'd be able to trade 3 1sts and Westbrooks huge contract for a big name player to get his "big 3". I'd love this scenario most of all. Let them crash and burn this year. Waste all their resources on a season in which they'd get a star player to just make the playoffs. So we kick that last pick to 2025 where LeBron is 40, Toni is 32 and they would have not brought in young talent to fill out the roster in years. Who's supposed to be #1 overall in '25??

That 4 was strung into multiple deals which ended up helping us at the end of the day.

The 4 for 8 and 17 deal got us Jax and NAW while sending out Solomon Hill and his salary. IIRC, that got grouped into a trade for Steven Adams.

Adams was subsequently flipped for Jonas and other pieces as part of a chain of trades that sent Ball out, got us Graham and Jonas, and got us pieces used for CJ later that season.

Was that pick used effectively? No, if we had known Garland was going to be a star despite only playing four games in college, we probably get him.

But we did parlay it into cleaning up our cap space and using pieces from it to get CJ and Jonas, who are starters for us.

Westbrook’s contract expires this year.

He can trade three picks on draft night but he doesn’t have a ton of pieces he can move with them to accept a large contract of a star player.

It also gave us the TPE that allowed us to take in Nance

Didn’t mention Nance but the ability to give Portland picks, expirings, and a TPE to clear their books is what got us CJ over other teams.

We didn’t have good assets in that deal but we had the exact ones Portland was looking for.

I think you could see them get someone like Beal at the draft. Wizards get some future draft capitol and get off Beal's future albatros of a contract. Money would probably work and it feels like the kind of trade the lakers would make. Make's my idea of waiting for the 2025 pick even juicier.
