2019 free agency—need to make a splash

It seems like the Pels plan may be to open up as much cap space next season as possible. They can possibly have just AD and Jrue if they are able to dump Moore and hill when and if need be.
I know this has been talked about in this board before and initially I was skeptical knowing that Peja was the best free agent to come to New Orleans and he was an overpay at that. Pels could not acquire another superstar with CP3 and the best they could do was teaming up Cousins with AD.
However, once I thought about it, the Hornets/Pels never had real cap space when CP3 and Davis were considered as superstars. CP3 was not considered to be a superstar around the league until his third season. The Hornets/Pels used all their cap space after his rookie year and acquired Peja and and Chandler(via trade). They never had cap space after that offseason in the CP3 era.
With Davis, the Hornets/Pels signed Gordon to a big contract and Anderson to a contract before his rookie season. Then they used their cap space after AD’s rookie season by acquiring Holiday and Evans. Again this was before AD was considered a superstar. Now the Pels did have cap space after AD’s 4th yr when the cap spiked and every team had cap space but the Pels were coming off a 30 win season.
For the sake of this conversation, let’s assume the Pels win 51 games next season and is the 4 seed that beats Okc in the first rd and loses to Golden State in 5 in the second round. Is it crazy to think the Pels can then attract a big free agent to team up with Davis and Holiday?
Thoughts?

How much cap space are we talking?
And what is the projected salary cap supposed to by this time next year?

Enough space for a max deal

If the Pels dump Moore and Hill and the cap is a projected 108 million, the Pels would have a projected 54ish million in cap room with only Davis, Holiday and Frank Jackson on the roster. (About 54 million) I’d go hard after Jimmy Butler (max) and they’d still have room to pay Randle if he comes off of a good season under the cap. They also have bird rights on Niko. Plus exceptions, etc... to fill out the rest of the roster.

You're not counting Niko's cap hold in that number, among other things.
But enough for a max deal, in theory.

Apparently he's fed up in Minny. Young guys are non-chalant. Go get him Dell.

The idea of this sounds better than the execution would be.
Ideally, Holiday would be the 2, Davis the 4, and they get a star 3 like Kawhi along with resigning Niko or Randle.
In practice, the Pelicans get left holding their dicks in their hand and have to over-pay players on 1-2 year deals to keep from making a Mozgov / Deng sized mistake.

Need to build through draft. Stop giving away our picks. This small market is gonna be hard to attract quality players, unless we over pay or they have limited options. We aren't an attractive team to jump on.

Kyrie and Butler want to play together after this year. Sign them both in 2019.
Kyrie
Butler
Jrue
Davis
And whoever else we need to fill a roster.

Yeah it’s going to require AD to recruit and get people here like he did with Randle.

Not possible, but it would up there as the best two-way 1-4 in the league.

Don't think we should dump Moore, he's good for what he's making. We HAVE to ship Hill out of here before the deadline.

We’ve never had cap space to be serious buyers nor have we had draft picks
Hopefully this “new dell” takes a breath and clears the slate

If we have 54M in cap space following this year, how would this not be possible? I know it's a pipe dream, but it is def possible if they both take 25M or so to play with Jrue and AD

It's hard to build through the draft unless you get early picks. Pels will be making the playoffs.

I’d agree in general but we’re in way too deep now. If that first gets your trash off your books and lands you a premier FA, you gotta do it. Especially if it makes AD sign that supermax because he’s got two premier wing men.

we already did this. We have AD and Jrue. We aren't picking in the top 5 anytime soon, so we aren't going to build through the draft right now b/c it's an extremely stupid way of trying to add talent given the odds of someone picked in the 20's will make any difference on your team.
The draft is all luck on getting an all star level player. we have a much better chance through trades and FA to get all star level players than making a pick at 22.

We would’ve been in too deep if boogie didn’t get hurt. His departure alleviates some pressure
I believe AD would leave in the neighborhood of $85 mil on the table if he didn’t take the supermax. That is motivation enough for him considering where he’s at in his career
You’ve eaten ajinca’s deal this long and it comes off the books after this coming year. Niko is done after this year. Randle has the option will he will likely decline if he plays well. These could be assets at the deadline and you may not have to send out picks with them. Could land a future contributor or two on a decent contract
Hill is the obvious bad one. You have to hope he shows improvement. If the right deal
came along, you can move him. But there is at least some light at the end of the tunnel. You have AD and Jrue, just have to chose how to build around them and not force it imo

most likely. stripping it down to chase free agents in NO is a massive risk, especially when Davis will be in an opt out year. the cap will be jumping up for everyone, if the projections hold.
more to the point; if you've got a 50 win team, why are you removing all of those players in the hopes of maxing out a UFA? you can be flexible and still have players you're not married to on the books.
