The music and lyrics work perfectly together. The delay and reverb on the guitar give it an eerie tone that's perfect for the story.

It struck me the other day, that if you speed that song up a bit, it's a lot like the theme to Gilligan's Island.

I love the song though, and the way it was produced and recorded. That mystical tone is something I try to over use.

Gordon Lightfoot did some of my favorite stuff, " If You Could Read My Mind" is so bad arse, in every aspect. There aren't many songs that are as great as that.

It's fantastic.

If you like that type of song, check out Breakfast in Hell by Slaid Cleaves.

it's one of those "gotta be in the mood" songs.

Not sure if it's perfect, but it's definitely one of those old songs I revisit periodically.

Not perfect...but an excellent song. It is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song.

I had a friend I used to call at work, when they asked who was calling I would always say I was Edmund Fitzgerald.

I really like Gordon Lightfoot and I love that song. I also really like several of his songs. Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind, Carefree Highway, Rainy Day People, to name a few.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya
At seven pm a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it's been good t'know ya

It’s got a melancholy feeling that just sums up how a cold, windy overcast day in November feels like.

Imagine how cold the water in Lake Superior must have been that night. Shiver just thinking about it.

Hope it wasn't colder than 32 degrees, I would hate to imagine that.
It would be a different kind of wreck altogether.

A lot of people don’t realize this but I was the sole survivor of that wreck. I backpedaled all the way to Whitefish Point but was unimpressed, so I jumped back in and swam across to Thunder Bay where I met Gordon and gave him the lyrics and a couple of the major chord progressions. If you check the liner notes you will see a shout out to me.

Always been a favorite of mine. Just read the wiki entry and learned this tidbit of trivia:
quote:

The song was the first commercial early digital multi-track recording tracked on the prototype 3M 32-track digital recorder, a novel technology for the time.
:mindblowngif:

Also probably the only top 10 hit song about the heavy shipping industry

It is one of the best "tells a story" songs of all time. It has a spacey feel, too, almost like a Pink Floyd song in its use of the space between the music.

The song also communicates cold and wet as well as any other. And dread.
