. . . so you don't have a favorite?

My initial thought was Randy Rhoads - and he is my favorite lead guitarist - but I'm going to go in a different direction and go with James Hetfield.
I've been playing guitar for around 40 years, and while I've attempted to practice scales and learn how to play lead on a few occasions, it's just not in my wheelhouse. And since I strictly play rhythm guitar and only play alone, I gravitate towards music that is defined by the rhythm guitar sound. For instance, if you asked me how any given Rolling Stones song goes, while Keith Richards is a fine guitarist, the vocals are going to be what pops into my mind. But in the metal genre, the rhythm guitar is the backbone of the songs and the characteristic that makes most songs recognizable. And James Hetfield is the master of the rhythm guitar. He's likewise a skilled songwriter with an entire catalogue of instantly recognizable music. As a rhythm guitarist, he is what I aspire to be.

Well, since ya takin’ me to task.....
This is largely influenced by the fact that The Crüe have been my favorite band since 1984.

Finally, someone who mentions the greatness that is Mark Thomas Tremonti. People can hate Creed all they want, but his guitar work was criminally underrated with them. His performance in AB is also stellar, but Myles’ singing style after Blackbird has become harder and harder to listen to. Sounds too “nasally”, and I have no idea why he does that on purpose when a recent acoustic performance of In Loving Memory showcased what made me fall in love with his voice.
Also John Frusciante, who is quite possibly the best provider of background vocals in the entire history of history.
Johnny Rzeznik deserves a mention.
Annnnnd Steven Curtis Chapman is also a fantastic guitarist.

Dimebag Darrell. I love the attitude and personality that you can feel through his playing.

Link Wray. He gives hackers, duffers and garage band jammers like me hope. And, he only had one lung.

Damn 7 pages and unless I've missed it nobody mentioned Rory Gallagher.
May has said his sound came from imitating Rory.
Rory wasn't as big as SRV mostly because he wasn't on a huge record label in america and wasn't playing on american radio. His focus was playing live in the 60's and 70's.
