If I’m watching him perform by himself, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Too many to mention although Gilmour has been a lifelong obsession . And Knopfler is my default that I never get tired of and who has the most impressive oeuvre over five decades imho .I tend to celebrate more than denigrate. And most of my faves have been discussed . Let me just mention a few that deserve mention:
Frampton- just incredible tone. He was on point as a guitarist at all times , a true craftsman.
Mike Campbell- maybe the most disciplined Accompanist-always in his lane and restrained and in the service of the song.
Steve Morse. C’mon guys. Where is the love for Steve. His Dregs catalogue is mind- blowing.
Nick Drake’s gorgeous finger picking.
Earl Klugh hit the chill button with virtuoso perfection.
Doyle Bramhall ll
Anybody that ever played in Steely Dan .
A million bluegrass/ country artists.
I could go on for days.

My personal top five, no question, in this order:
David Gilmour
John Frusciante
Adam Jones
Alex Lifeson
Hetfield/Hammett combo.
ETA:
Damn I'm the first person to say Adam Jones? That makes me sad.
No Tool or Metallica fans here?

Maybe.
I'm a Tool fan, but the rhythm section is just dominant.
Jones would be in my top list, but OP said "favorite guitarist" - not Top 5 list or whatever.

That is a very solid addition to this thread. And very deserving in any best guitarist discussion.

He's awesome and in my top 10 for sure. But not my absolute favorite, which is what this thread is about. I got to see the original lineup of the Dixie Dregs last year and it was truly amazing. They were a band that I thought I'd never get to see but they came to Boulder and I got to go. Not only that but got front row seats right in front of Steve. The only thing is that he's having some real issues with his wrist. Some kind of carpal tunnel thing I believe. He's still great but not at the same level he used to be.

Yeah I saw the Dregs last year in Nola. The best guitarist I ever saw in Boulder was Richard Thompson.

I was fortunate to see the original band back in the early 80’s ? Still my benchmark concert. I’ve seen Steve solo twice, once right after High Tension Wires.
My favorite currently is Jimmy Herring. His three solo records are an enlightening run. Especially Subject to Change Without Notice.
Also a shout out to Richie Kotzen.
