I already know the answer to my own question...but what do you say? I was born in 80' so I wasn't old enough to appreciate the 80's but the 80's is my answer. I feel like the 80's had a strong music to movie ratio. What says you? Obviously we can get first hand accounts for the old farts out there... nothing personal. So what you got for? What decade had the best music?

This debate comes up often. If I have to pick one it would be the 70s.

Objectively probably the 70's. Subjectively, the 80's and early 90's.

The question on the movie thread is debatable (70s or 80s or 90s). Musically, it is the 70s hands down.

The 70's and 80's are neck-and-neck. The main difference is that a lot of the 70's best music was also its most popular music, while with the 80's you sometimes have to do a little digging to find the gold.

The 60's are right behind them.

I think from a popular music perspective, no period was more creative or transformative than the
mid-60’s to the mid 70’s.

Think it depends on age. Growing up in the 90's and being in college during the 2010's that 30 year stretch stands out, but particularly the 90's. On the other hand, I was raised right so I was exposed to tons of music from the 60's-80's, and objectively the 70's are by far the best. With that bias in mind I rank them:

70's
90's
80's
00's
60's
10's

70’s, but the 60’s are right up next to it. 65-75 is easily the best 10 year run for music.

I often advocate for the 2000’s, but only for the perspective that it’s underrated, not that it’s actually the best.

80’s is the most overrated music decade.

If you are looking for diversity when it comes music then it should be the 80s.

Probably the weakest genre during that decade was country.

See. I feel like the 90’s is absolutely chocked full of Good music, and has far less stinkers than most other decades. At the same time, I feel like truly GREAT tracks are hard to come by. The 90’s perform really well against other decades because of the depth of quality, but it comes up short when comparing the absolute best songs between decades. Think of the 90’s like a conference that’s deep with good teams but lacks a dominant team that’s heads and shoulders better than everyone else. As a result, the conference does really well in bowl season, but fails to send a team to the playoff.
