Whatever years the Dr. Demento show was airing. Best music ever.

The 90s get shite on because the last few years turning into the TRL era and music going to total corporate shite…buuut early to mid 90s had a lot of good genres going strong, it may have had the best mix of genres of the eras up for debate.

The question on the movie thread is debatable (70s or 80s or 90s). Musically, it is the 70s hands down.
For movies, the 90s is easily the best, with 70s not so far behind. 80s aren't close.
Music it probably is the 70s, as in addition to everything else, that decade laid the framework for future styles such as rap and EDM.

All great but not nearly that diverse genre wise. Only makes sense that that future generations would be more diverse in genre because more genres developed over time or branched out from bigger genres. The 2000s saw the rise of all of new genres as well as sub genres.

The 2000s saw the rise of subgenres that had already been created in the 70s. Bands like Black Sabbath Self-Titled, Kraftwerk Autobahn, Sugar Hill Gang Rappers Delight, The Stooges Fun House, Talking Heads '77, Brian Eno Hear Come the Warm Jets, New York Dolls, NEU!, Devo, Television, The Clash. Everything started in the 70s.

Orlando and 3 Dog don't add much. Charlie Rich is strong.

I'm going to say the 60's with the 70's a very close runner-up.
When you think of the absolute legends, most of them broke out in the 60s: Bealtes, Dylan, Doors, Stones, Jimi, Janis, Motown. And when you consider we're mainly talking the late 60's, it's quite impressive.
Then when you add country artists like Merle, Buck, Loretta Lynn, Jones, Marty Robbins, etc. the decade was probably unrivaled in the complete reshaping of the musical landscape.

I think from a popular music perspective, no period was more creative or transformative than the
mid-60’s to the mid 70’s.
Most transformative was the 50s. Rock and roll.
Or the 20s with jazz.

Dr Joyce taught a class at Tulane on the history of popular music. He divided up the time frames for music and culture exactly that way.

Some people regard Buck Owens and the Buckaroos as the first southern rock band.

That was early 2000s for and while there was some great music there it didn’t seem that great until 20 years later and maybe that’s only the nostalgia talking. I’m a fan of late 60s early 70s music. I often wonder how much longer that music will be around. Most people who were young then are still alive today but they’re getting old. Hopefully there’s people younger than me who will keep it alive.

Good music never ages.
I work at Goodwill and I have seen many of the resellers wear shirts that had Metallica and Hendrix as examples. They were in late teens or early 20s.
The song sound of silence by Simon and Garfunkel wasn't a huge hit in the early 70s but when Disturbed covered it, it exploded in popularity. Now everyone wants to cover that song.
The song 16 tons by Merle Travis and Tennessee Ford back in the day was popular but faded as time went on. South Park decided to play the song during an episode that involved Amazon. That song was well liked and it grew in popularity.
Fallout New Vegas played older songs and one of them was big iron by Marty Robbins and the song began to grow in popularity.
Family Guy use to play Conway Twitty which was intended to annoy the network and TV viewers. Well some viewers commented that I never heard of this dude but he is actually pretty good.
