Which band was carried most by its lead singer?

I’ve always thought of Journey. Some might say Queen which you can’t argue with.

Legitimately crazy. Neal Schon was picked by Santana to be his new guitar player when Schon was 15 years old.
Now, they were a Santana-esque extended jam band before Perry turned them into a platinum singles machine, for sure, but even Steve Perry (Journey is Mrs. Midnight's favorite's band) would likely correct you on such a suggestion.
Queen is a interesting point because, while the backline were incredibly talented, Freddie was their killer app, so to speak.
While we're talking about singers who overshadowed their bands, Ann Wilson, anyone?

This is a good call. Other similar choices would be The Kinks and The Dire Straits.

Without Janice Joplin this band goes nowhere.

I thought Veder was amazing live back in the day, but you're saying Ten and Vs. were amazing albums because of the vocals?

Bad Company had solid players, but you have to think that one of the best rock singers to ever lift a mic put them over the top.

Nope. Jerry Cantrell wrote almost all of the music and lyrics. I'm not saying Layne wasn't an amazing vocalist, but he wrote very little.

I hear DJs say, Jim Morrison and The Doors, as if that's the band's name.
