What’s the best long-married song and why is it She’s Always A Woman by Billy Joel?

My wife hates this song because she thinks it makes women sound awful. I think it sounds like a guy who has been married a good long while and still loves his wife despite her flaws (which he now is very familiar with).

That's pretty much it. I remember watching an interview of Billy talking about 'The Stranger' album and that song in particular meant something similar to what you said. Also the humming in the song represented thoughts and meditation about that woman. He went on and said that he used to get mad at his ex-drummer Lib DeVitto for always referring to the song as "She's Only a Woman". Classic song and album.

It was Joel's response to all of the criticism he heard about his then wife (Elizabeth Weber Small, who was his manager at times and also brought in her brother as a manager of Joel's affairs as well). The soft side he saw of her (as his wife) was in sharp contrast to her harsh public persona, particularly dealing with record company executives and others in an adversarial context.
Keep in mind that she and her brother broke a young Billy Joel in half, financially and he later compared them to the Borgias. During the initial phase of the divorce, her brother sided with Joel, but secretly embezzled $30 million from him over the succeeding years.
Prior to getting involved with Joel, she was married to his musical partner, Jon Small (with whom Joel was in a short-lived duo called Atilla). Draw whatever inferences about this lady you like.
