What’s a band/artist of the past you’ve found yourself growing to love the older you get?

For me it’s Alice In Chains. I’m of the belief they’re probably the greatest 90s rock band. Yes, Pearl Jam and Nirvana are incredible. But for various reasons, AIC has firmly positioned themselves in my own musical Mount Rushmore of bands.

I've re-connected with U2 in recent years. Far from my favorite band, but after Pop in the early 90's, I kind of abandoned them.

Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of music by former members of the Beatles after they went solo or formed other groups. Man, George Harrison really had one heck of a solo career, didn’t he?

The Police. Didn't listen to them a whole lot when I was younger. I love them now. All their stuff is fabulous.

probably The Beatles and maybe Elvis.
as a kid i listened to the beatles but, i don't think i appreciated them then. as i got older and listened more, i started to like them more and more. They are now my all time favorite band.
Elvis was huge back then and i didn't really get why. didn't bother me at all when he died. as i got older and started looking at the impact he had and the hits he put out, i appreciated him more.

#1 should be, Cantrell was the best songwriter from that era.

I try, but I just can’t seem to get into Alice in Chains too much. I don’t know if it’s just the overly sad tone or something about Cantrell’s voice that doesn’t vibe with me. I just don’t get hyped for it. I don’t dislike AIC, but it doesn’t connect with me like a lot of other songs from that era by Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. Maybe they’re a band I haven’t matured enough to appreciate, yet as I still hold on to too much of the angsty bullshite mindset that had me jamming out to Rage Against the Machine at age 15.

The Byrds, followed really closely by The Kinks.

I'm with you. He remained relevant and true to himself without any discernible ego.

Steely Dan
This is the correct answer. If you're male and growing older and you don't dig Steely Dan to some degree, you're doing it wrong.
I'm sure guys who were young in the 1970s as Steely Dan were releasing albums enjoyed their music, but it's as though their catalog was meant to age for a few decades and be discovered by middle-aged and old men.

The only AIC album I can tolerate is their Unplugged one, and even then I lose interest about halfway through it.

This is an interesting one for me. I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten into punk that wasn’t a teen or pre-teen when they first heard it. How old were you when you first started listening to them a lot more and what songs were connecting with you?

Same. Love “All Things Must Pass”. Great album. I struggle to like everything after that, though.

Ive mentioned this before, but its Bruce Springsteen.... Absolutely had no time for him at all when I was in my teens.. actually, hated it...
Then in college, some older dudes turned me on to his early catalog... I became obsessed and then even the 80s stuff made more sense to me and although it suffered from "80s Production" I could get past that...
And while I get that a lot still find his music overly histrionic and bombastic... I fricking love it! I'm also convinced most have never really listened to him and base it off a handful of the heavy radio rotation songs... or hate his politics..
edit: Plus Bruce and the E Street Band is a fricking helluva show! The best...

Steely Dan is the most obvious one to me. Never really listened to them when I was younger. But more than Steely is Thin Lizzy. They're such an underrated band to me. Sure, everybody knows Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back In Town. But all of their stuff is awesome. Had to edit and add Frank Sinatra. I find Frank to be amazing. All the other crooner types just seem like poor imitations of him.

This is a good one. While I don't listen all the time, I can listen to some Elvis stuff now and really enjoy it. When I was younger, I was just not having any of it.
