This is a good one. I’d also add Fleetwood Mac. As a teenager in the 90s I viewed both as supremely cheesy, but they’ve grown on me a lot as I’ve aged.

I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten into punk that wasn’t a teen or pre-teen when they first heard it
I was in my 30s when Enema came out, and I loved it and the next album. The earlier stuff was too raw for me.

Same. When I was growing up, my oldest brother loved 80’s Springsteen and Mellencamp and drove them into the ground. It wasn’t until I tried listening to older stuff off of “Born to Run” or “Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ” that I found appreciation for Bruce. His lyrics are just so incredibly moving. Everything feels so desperate, romantic, and adventurous. The descriptiveness and imagery conveyed is some of the best in popular music, and set a high benchmark which I work tirelessly striving towards in my own writing. It’s hard to hear “Thunder Road” and listen to the lyrics and not feel something. I want to write something that makes a listener feel like I do when I hear “Thunder Road”.

Sure a lot of their songs sound the same but idk if you can find a more technically sound band out there.

Tears for Fears. When I was a teen in the 80s, I didn't love or hate them. They were just kinda there and putting out songs that got regular airplay on the radio and Mtv.

Now, I think that they're incredibly underrated. Men at Work too, to a lesser erxtent.

This is the correct answer. If you're male and growing older and you don't dig Steely Dan to some degree, you're doing it wrong.

It would have been my answer, but I've loved them since Aja came out when I was around 7 years old.

something about Cantrell’s voice that doesn’t vibe with me.

Staley and DuVall are the bands singers. Cantrell is guitarist and backing/harmonizing. Their early stuff is of course amazing but the 2018 album Ranier Fog is one of the best straight rock albums to come out recently.

Allman Brothers and Neil Young (both before my time but grown deep in me over time)

P.S. Saw Alice In Chains open for Van Halen in 1991. Caught tail end of Man in the Box b/c my wife (then girlfriend) had a punctuality problem (still does). We argued through most of it. I think I "missed" a good one.

With Leon Russell on piano. Great song.

As for me, it's The Rolling Stones.

John Mayer. I was in college when "Your Body is a Wonderland" came out and I absolutely hated that song so I always wrote him off as this vapid, pop guy. A couple of years ago a song of his popped up in some random Spotify playlist I was listening to and it wasn't that bubblegum pop trash. I started listening to his other stuff like "awhiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey," "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," and others and he's actually one of my favorite musicians now.

Chicago. As a kid I never really paid much attention to them. Then in the 80s as a teen I heard their "radio" songs and felt like they were too nerdy with all the love songs. Then later I discovered the good Chicago from the 70s.........and man they jammed!
