Nice add. I wasn't familiar with this one, but it does trigger a memory in me of another song that is extremely difficult to listen to for similar reasons:
eels - "Dead of Winter"
The song is about watching his mother battle with, and ultimately die from, cancer.

I guess it would depend on the circumstances such as if there's been a death or I'm contemplating potential loss.
And usually it's the voice itself, the instrumentation or the incredible harmonies that do it vs. lyrics.
"Smile" - Tony Bennett ... Watching the movie Chaplin when the instrumental version plays I well up. Chaplin loved Tonys version.
"Al Di La" - Connie Francis ... Again it's the incredible beauty and emotion of her voice that can bring me to tears.
"He" - The McGuire Sisters ... Their harmonies were pure if without much nuance. This would be the message with the harmonies.
"I Believe" - Tom Jones ... This is the message and the voice. My god the power he brings by the end is fantastic.

Amazing Grace especially if done on bagpipes
Old rugged cross - my grandmother’s favorite church hymn
Grandpa- the Judds...I miss the talks we had
Silent night - on occasion, it’s onion cutting time
Ave Maria -Aaron Neville...on occasion-more onions

There's really not a song out there that can make me cry, but Don Mclean's Vincent, use to hit me in the feels pretty hard.

That whole album is just brutal... dealing with his Mom and Sister... but "P.S. You Rock My World". may be one of the most life-affirming songs of all time to close that record out..

As a little boy I will never forget one particular song that made me cry. Performed at JFK funeral. Took me a while to find the name of the song.

"The Living Years" Mike & The Mechanics (b/c I lost my dad when I was 18 y.o. and I came to the realization that life is not fair).
"I Saw Red" by Warrant (b/c it talks about being cheated by a girl and I had a similar experience from a g/f I had).
"The Flame" by Cheap Trick (the lyrics and nostalgia from 1988 does it for me).

Red Sovine can always get me with his voice.
If you want to really test your limits, there's an album called A Crow Looked at Me by Mount Eerie. It's about the death of his wife from cancer and how he and his young daughter dealt with the experience. It's extremely dark and emotional.

quote:This one hits me hard for a couple of reasons. It always makes me think about my dad, but I also heard it the night before we found out we lost our twins, and so it took on a whole new meaning. There are actually several songs around that event that are guaranteed to bring the tears.

Lately Zac Brown Band - My Old Man really gets the onions cutting. I think because we have a 3 month old and there are so many things I would love to ask my dad about raising him.
