I understand that Dolly wrote it and recorded it first, but I am referring to the pop/rock charts, so I referenced the Whitney version first.
I mentioned that it also hit No.1 on the country charts as further evidence of its widespread appeal.

Those Motown songs sound dated when I listen to them. Not sure a 90s or current audience would like them. Maybe an updated modern version.

I think Take on Me and Just Like A Dream are timeless

Does it half to be total charts for this exercise or just that of a certain genre?

I'm referring to the mainstream Top 40 pop/rock charts, but you can interpret it however you want.

"The House of the Rising Sun" The vocals are so strong and the emotion is so palpable it transcends time. I think with modern polish it would still be huge. Could even be huge in its original analog form

This already happened. It is Smooth by Santana and rob thomas.
Also I think uptown funk-Bruno mars could be a good one from 70s on.
Michael Jackson had a few. Billie Jean probably plays in all eras.

You're asking what the greatest pop song since The Beatles, right?
So, including The Beatles, It's Yesterday.
Not including The Beatles, it is probably I Can't Get No Satisfaction.
(Yes, pop songs by British Invasion rock bands were dangerous combinations.)

Something like Adele - “Rolling in The Deep” would be a hit in any generation.

That’s a really good choice.
Timeless is the keyword apparently and that really narrows my choices. I’m going with a Johnny Mercer/Henry Mancini collaboration.
