What made Dave Matthews Band so polarizing back in the day?

There’s a ton of music/bands out there regardless of genre that people would say “I’m just not into them” or “they’re alright”. Seems with these guys you either went to as many of their shows as you could possibly go to or you absolutely didn’t like them at all.

I liken Matthews to Springsteen. Both unique, out of the ordinary sounds, and both have rabid fans (as in biggest touring acts of their time) or folks that really don't like them or don't care.

I'm of the "not into them" opinion on Matthews, but am personally a huge Springsteen guy. However, I understand the folks who don't like him. (cue the Boss haters and political comments...).

In the late 90's, they were still kind of lumped into the jam band scene, though they had achieved pretty significant commercial success. With that commercial success came fans that didn't really mesh with the jam band fanbase. It was the first time I had heard their fans be called "Chads". The jam band fans moved away from them and started hating on them because of the fans they attracted.

It was stupid then, and it's still stupid. They're a super talented band and their shows have always been a good time to me, though back then I much preferred Phish and Widespread Panic.

When enough people like a band and they become mainstream you’re bound to get some haters. I really like DMB. I don’t think they purport to be a jam band but they get lumped in there which pisses jam band fans off, which I think is unjustified. I like their sound a lot.

I used to be a huge dmb fan. Been to 42 shows or some shite. I listen to them occasionally but not nearly like I used to. I played drums for a bit and my teacher gave me a few albums to listen to, one of which was Crash. Carter’s sound blew me away. The originality of the songs was really new to me. I’ve since become better on guitar and Dave’s positioning isn’t nearly as fun now that the magic is gone, the most impressive part of that band is how in sync the drums and bass are. They sound like a computer absolutely flawless. His lyrics aren’t nearly as magical and mysterious as I once thought they were, some are pretty lame.

For me, there is too much similarity in the sounds of their songs and I can’t stand his voice. Something about it gets under my skin. He sounds whiny to me.

Having said that, I do appreciate the musicianship and talent. It just isn’t my cup of tea and I will turn the station if a DMB song comes on while I’m driving.

I wasn't familiar with them until a girl at work gave me the Live at Red Rocks CD set for my birthday back in the late 90's. I listened to it without bias and came to really like the live show vibe from that era. I would have liked to see a show from that time frame.

We did a southern Phish run in 1994 seeing Memphis, Oxford, New Orleans and Oak Mountain.

DMB opened for Phish at Oak Mountain, and there was a notable difference in the scene for the DMB show vs. the Phish show. Heavy, heavy frat presence. I think that sort of clean cut frat boy presence (not that the jamband scene didn't have a shite ton of frat boys in it already) made them hated by the rest of the scene.

As someone else said: kind of dumb, as they're good. I just didn't really care for them all that much, ever.

Most phish fans I know don’t like dmb. Not sure what the issue is.

Agreed. I was pretty indifferent to dmb, the sound was ok and different enough I suppose. But I couldn’t stand the fan base.

My thing was the songwriting just wasn't very good. Incredible musicians and great production, but...meh.

I think this has a lot to do with it. DMB brought in a ton of fraternity guys & sorority girls to their shows in the 90's that weren't into other Jam bands. The true Jam band fans didn't respect them causing much friction.

Never been my thing.

The dudes in college at the party with the backwards hat on trying to play Crash ruined them for me.
