To me, it's not that he's whiny. It's not his voice in and of itself. It's the way he says the words. Listen to any impression of him because those guys emphasize the odd quality.
He does have some weird inflections with his voice, and it's even present when he talks. Always assumed it was just because of his South African heritage, but it sometimes comes across like he was dropped on his head as a baby or something.
I broke up with a girl in college because of her obsession with his voice. That wasn't the sole reason, but it played a big part. She also worshiped Eddie Vedder whose howling and whatnot in some of his singing grates my nerves as well.

Then there was this: On August 8, 2004 over the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago, Illinois, a tour bus belonging to the Dave Matthews Band dumped an estimated 800 pounds of human waste from the bus's septic tank onto a passenger sightseeing boat on the Chicago River below.
That's a load of shite.

Mainly their fans.
Went to high school in Virginia in the mid-late 90s. Very white suburban neighborhood, every single car in the student parking lot had a DMB sticker on it. There was an outdoor concert place called Nissan Pavilion and when they preformed you’d think the pope was in town.

I listened to them a good bit when I was like 12-16 years old but think I just kind of got bored with it.

Say what you want about Dave’s band, but as an actor he is hilarious and is great on screen.

I'm of the "not into them" opinion on Matthews, but am personally a huge Springsteen guy. However, I understand the folks who don't like him. (cue the Boss haters and political comments...).
I like Springsteen’s politics a lot better than his music.
