The DMB version of "All Along The Watchtower" is the worst cover I've ever heard.

I never saw his music as polarizing. I know people that were sick of the bro culture the fan base developed. I always enjoyed lots of his music.

It's their music. It has a broad appeal for a lot of people, while also being repulsive to others.
I fall in the latter category, but there are definitely bands that I dislike more than DMB. Not many, though.

Weren’t DMB and Hootie fans somewhat interchangeable?
Very much so, imo. That Hootie and the Blowfish album was a sure sign that music in the mid 90s was starting to suck, big time. It's only went downhill from there.

Dave’s whiney voice plus their douchy fanbase.

Then there was this: On August 8, 2004 over the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago, Illinois, a tour bus belonging to the Dave Matthews Band dumped an estimated 800 pounds of human waste from the bus's septic tank onto a passenger sightseeing boat on the Chicago River below.

When they hit it big I was in high school. I really enjoyed their sound. It was fun and the amount of different instruments in the band gave off a cool feeling.
However, when I got into college I really hated the fans. It never changed my perception of DMB .. just... it became a measurement of douche.
As stated in the thread, the lyrics really weren't much so when some guy or girl tried to say "oh, this song speaks to my soul" or some shite I just wrote that person off as a douche.
But I've recently put them back on my play list and I love the sound. I compare them to Fine Young Cannibals. Just fun. Upbeat. A really good nostalgic peice of the 90's

I was never a big DM fan. Did not hate them but would not say I liked them either.
That said, saw them in concert in Memphis in mid 2000s. Willie Nelson opened. And, to their credit DMB out on one hell of a live show.

Late 90's music was great, but I only base that on Widespread Panic and Phish being at their peak, and Radiohead making one of the greatest albums ever - OK Computer.

I think of Nu Metal bands like Limp Bizkit, Boy Bands, Brittneys and Christinas, and forgettable one hit wonders like Fastball, Deep Blue Something, and OMD.
Oh, and Creed. Lots and lots of Creed. I hated it.

What made Dave Matthews Band so polarizing
Probably because they sucked
Posted on 4/5/21 at 4:14 pm to REB BEER
Anyone who says “they suck” doesn’t play an instrument and it’s obvious. Also clumsily working through simple man on your acoustic fender doesn’t count as playing an instrument.
If his voice annoys you fine, if the fans are frat douche stars and you can’t stand that then fine, but that band together creates a really really great sounding band. I don’t think even the most die hard dmb haters (who know a shred about playing music) would disagree

No doubt they are good, technical musicians. But the sound is just boring.
Posted on 4/5/21 at 5:12 pm to Zappas Stache
It just got old and overhyped. Nothing wrong with him specifically, but it was meant for mass appeal. The instrumentals were technically sound, but had no edge to them.
On other note, calling everyone 'douchey' has become the new douchey thing to do.

too much similarity in the sounds of their songs and I can’t stand his voice. Something about it gets under my skin. He sounds whiny
This is my take as well. I can't turn the volume off fast enough when I hear DMB.

To me, it's not that he's whiny. It's not his voice in and of itself. It's the way he says the words. Listen to any impression of him because those guys emphasize the odd quality. Like Fallon.

DMB is the “punchable face” of music.
There are people who are good looking, average looking, or ugly - and they can all be ignored. But then there are people who can be any of the above but just have a face that begs to be punched. And it’s not usually due to any particular facial feature that can be described or defined - it just “is”.
Same with music. There are bands that are good, average, or terrible, but if their sound is not your thing, you can ignore them. Then there are bands that can be any of the above but just annoy the crap out of you. DMB falls into that category.
