It's got to be either The Allman Brothers or The Grateful Dead, right?
My first thought would be the Allmans, but the Dead has a lot of related acts, solo projects, etc, as well.

The Byrds: Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Graham Parsons, Chris Hillman.
The Yardbirds: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck.

Who is a spinoff or related act is obviously up for debate, some came before, some came after, etc..
The Allman Brothers Band
From their Wiki page, and it leaves a bunch of offshoot bands off, such as Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, The Warren Haynes Band, The Derek Trucks Band, and others, including Duane Betts and Devon Allman and their multiple projects.

Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds together is vast

Squirrel Bait.. This was up to a certain point in time.. it has splintered off further.. I don't see the Breeders/Lemonheads/all the various bands from Pajo..

That's like trying to follow the Targaryen family tree.

my answer is the byrds as noted earlier. Another would be mayall/bluesbreakers

That may be true for the Dead bands, but the Allman offshoots have been producing new music for decades, such Gov’t Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band, etc. Warren Haynes just released a new album yesterday.

It doesn’t count if no one has heard of any of these bands

The original Steve Miller band threw off some offshoots

This looks like the correct answer. Now, which band had the most successful offshoots? Probably The Yardbirds, but a close second would be Genesis:
Peter Gabriel - solo career
Phil Collins - solo career
Mike Rutherford - Mike And The Mechanics

Skynyrd has a lot of associated acts, but not sure how many would count as true offshoots.
Rickey Medlocke had formed Blackfoot then disbanded them before joining LS, then reformed it after leaving and that was when they got noticed.
Donnie Van Zant has .38 Special but has no other connection to LS outside of being a family member. He and Johnny also went country as Van Zant.
Then the more true offshoots/spinoffs...
Rossington Collins Band
Allen Collins Band
Rossington/The Rossington Band
Artimus Pyle Band/All Points Bulletin
Randall Hall Band (started as lead singer of the Allen Collins Band and then filled in for Collins when Skynyrd reformed)
A lot of the surviving members played with a band called Alias in 1979.

The Brit Prog Rock scene of the 70s/80s is bananas. Just Yes would be a chore to sort out, but then throw in King Crimson and the like(Asia, ELP, etc.)? Whew.
More of a web of interconnections of various members, but similar to the Byrds, sorting out the tapestry of members of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow and assorted acts requires graduate-level research.

not sure what band was the original Elephant 6 band, but there are a ton of them that share band members between all of them.

Cool chart. It could be updated with Coverdale-Page and I think Cozy Powell played in several groups/projects not shown.
