As much as I love Lee Bains and the gloryfires, their album Dereconstructed is a muddy mix mess of an album compared to their other albums. It’s rock and roll but it’s almost unlistenable to me.

100% correct. First album I thought of when I read the thread title.

A lot of 80’s rock albums by bands like Dokken, Quiet Riot, Metallica, Ratt, and Twisted Sister sound very poorly mixed.

Most of my own releases aren’t particularly well mixed either.

I often wish both Acid Bath albums could have gotten proper recording and mixing.

Rush - Vapor Trails was horrible when it came out. It was a victim of the loudness wars of the early 2000's. I just couldn't listen to it. The remixed it a few years back and it sounds a thousand percent better and is a decent album.

Yeah, thankfully they still had the masters to save it.

I also have to add Sturgill Simpson - Sound & Fury. It may be a decent album, but I absolutely cannot listen to it. I swear they found a way to mix nails on a chalkboard into it.

Kiss and Hotter Tha Hell

I would also say the Stones Goats Head Soup. After the Giles Martin remix, it sounds much better.

They do sound like they were recorded through a single mic they bought at TG&Y. But then that was the punk aesthetic of the time.

I feel like some of the Disturbed stuff is weird - specifically the song "Remember". It just sounds muted or something. Am I imagining this? Because some of their stuff has GREAT production (e.g. 10000 Fists).

The Gilded Palace of Sin

Probably more victims of poor production value than poor mixing, but 2 essential and influential albums with less than stellar sound quality.

For a band known for it's "cinematic, big and in your face style of music" Queen had 3 albums with very poor mixing/sound.

1st album - very muddy drum sound Queen
Jazz - very thin sound overall and especially drums Queen Jazz
Innuendo - same as Jazz Queen Innuendo

When ZZ Top’s first 4-5 albums were released on CD, for some reason the band decided to remix them with echo on the vocals, reverb added to the drums and just generally ‘brightening’ up the mix. They RUINED them. Unlistenable. Fortunately I had all the original vinyl pressings.

Many years later, the band re-released the early albums with the enhancements removed. They still don’t sound right to me.

Eta: Fleetwood Mac’s “Mystery To Me” always sounded poorly mixed and muddy.

Yes, it’s amazing. His playing on that album is fantastic. What an injustice.

As a bassist, And Justice For All, really pissed me off. There’s no hear able bass.

In Through the Out Door was horribly mixed. As an example, the rough mix of In The Evening was far superior to what ended up on the album (vocals no longer buried in the mix, clearer bass, etc).

It’s like they just took the bass fader and pulled it all the way down.
