Van Halen is meh

To me.
I’ve never been a big fan and yesterday Everybody Wants Some! came up on the playlist, and I remembered why.
Good lead guitar is what they have going for them.
People criticize lyrics of bands that it is popular to hate on but these guys have mostly shitty lyrics.
Running’ With the Devil-a good song- and on their debut album, was the highlight of their career.

What is below meh, because that's where I have them.

It was fun music. Rock'n Roll. That's it. I still love it for that reason.

You sir win the worst opinion of the internet today. Congratulations.

At least they're not The Eagles or Aerosmith.

Thank you sir.
But perhaps we forgot about the scintillating poetry of Hot For Teacher.

Prepare for the onslaught of downvotes. Roth era VH is amazing.

You didn't like that? Have you ever burned yourself with cigarettes or any other type of self mutilation? Some people hate fun.

Exactly. Imagine being an 11 year old boy in 1984 watching the Hot for Teacher video on Night Tracks for the first time. That was me & I will remember that as long as I will live.

you not being a fan doens't mean that they are meh.
Van Halen was fricking awesome. Just like with oooooh pretty much any bad that's ever existed, if all you ever hear of them is the 3 or 4 songs that the radio plays incessantly I can imagine you'd probably grow tired of them. Van Halen came out with a sound that was unique that people hadn't really been exposed to before with a combination of an all-time master on guitar, a stereotypical ringmaster style front man, and a harmonizing vocalist on bass. In adidtion to them all just being excellent at their craft, they simply kicked hella arse. Pure, straightforward, kickass rock. If you actually like hard rock, it's kinda not possible to not like Van Halen.

Man, I've got a young daughter, and she loves to see me playing air guitar and doing my DLR impersonation in the kitchen when an old VH song comes on the radio. It's just fun.
I'm into serious writing, more than most people, but there is a great place for just rock'n stuff. We all need it.

That’s a good point. I’ve made the same argument about other bands/artists/books/movies.
I will go back to I am not personally impressed and think their lyrics are poor.
Some have said “fun.” I can respect that as well.
Also applies to lots of music without critical acclaim.

They were a Southern California (when SoCal was cool) party band that emerged through the fog of late 1970s disco and punk. They had a guitar hero, a bigger than life front man, and wrote hard rock pop songs. If you can’t find some semblance of enjoyment in VH, then you gotta be a glass half empty kind of person. They literally became one of the biggest bands in the world. That doesn’t happen by accident.

Desire for critical acclaim destroyed a lot of good stuff.

Van Halen songs have lyrics?
I never went to a Van Halen concert or put on a VH record to be lyrically enlightened, or even properly sung to for that matter.

I've never bought a VH recording, or seen them live. I just love it when it hits on the radio at the right time.

But if you wanted some pure, beer drinking party music Van Halen was a fantastic choice. Van Halen was the definition of fun.
