Van Halen is meh
quote:I agree that that's a bottom quartile song of theirs. You need to let it go.
I’ve never been a big fan and yesterday Everybody Wants Some! came up on the playlist, and I remembered why.

Good lead guitar is what they have going for them.
quote:You care too much about lyrics.
People criticize lyrics of bands that it is popular to hate on but these guys have mostly shitty lyrics.
Here's what you're missing:
Atomic Punk - pure raging energy. And this came out in 1978
Little Dreamer - absolutely steamy guitar for a quasi-ballad
DOA - what a groove
Light Up the Sky - burn baby burn
Mean Streets - there's your lyrics for you. This is some dark shite and incredible in all aspects
Unchained - you don't like this? Go back to Russia
Take Your Whiskey Home - you write a groove like this
The entire 1984 album says "kiss my arse" - Girl Gone Bad is the highlight, and Jesus is ashamed of you for your OP
And there are plenty of good Sammy tracks as well. I'd start with Dreams.

Then I apologize. But I wouldn’t even admit to the pop stuff I like with this crowd. Haha!
I’ve enjoyed the perspectives here for the most part. Even those who went hyperbolic out of their VH love and had false assumptions.
Learned some things too.

I saw them in concert a couple years ago with Roth and was very disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high but their stage show stunk. DLR talked about his sheep dogs at his California ranch for Pete’s sake!

Never got the chance to see Van Halen although I did get to see an almost note perfect rendition of Eruption played by Dweezil Zappa. Before they played it, Dweezil told a story about trying to learn how to play this song as a teenager and having trouble. He said his Dad called Eddie who came over and taught Dweezil the right way. This was the same show where Dweezil's mother sat behind me with a few other relatives. They also played Somebody Get Me a Doctor. Good show.

Van Halen isn't one of my favorite bands, but you can't deny their influence on rock and roll music. Can you imagine being a kid/teenager in 1978 and putting on their debut album for the first time, Running With The Devil blasting through the speakers?

how obnoxiously loud we used to crank them from our Blaupunkt speakers back in high school
Blaupunkt speakers? Speak for yourself. I had to deal with a JVC boom box stuck in a small bookshelf along with some cd's and cassettes.

This describes me. I was 15 in 1978 and Van Halen was the absolute bomb. Along with AC/DC they were far and away the most popular new rock bands in my high school

Yes I was there.
Runnin With the Devil was great. I already said that. I still have that album.

Ha. Had a 8 track under the seat that skipped when I went over the railroad tracks too fast, and Jensen coaxials in the back

Blasted them on 8 Track through the Jensen speakers in a ‘69 Malibu with the trunk open at Surfside beach chugging ice cold bud and smoking some hot bud with some hot babes thinking I was Jeff Spicoli.

Dang. Summers of ‘76 and ‘77 I was there all the time.

I wouldn’t under rate Alex or Anthony either. Their hard hitting heavy play was a fundamental part of VH’s signature sound even as the band evolved.

"Van Halen is meh and Night Ranger is great." This board should be ashamed of itself.

People in my day who didn’t like Van Halen were usually found hidden in their room in the middle of the day listening to Barry Manilow, and movie soundtracks of Saturday Night Fever, Greece, Xanadu, and A Star is Born.
