Everyone has to like what you do?
I’d love to hear the bands/artists you don’t like, so I could make a ridiculous leap to a generalization.

Appreciate the actual discussions with others of you.

I saw this thread title and thought, "Here's a thread that'll have someone being called an a-hole for having differing opinions in music than someone else."

Did not disappoint.

If you knew me at all you would know how stupid your statement is.
I like most popular music and I am not musically edgy at all.
And it’s especially rich coming from someone like you who seems to gravitate to the relatively unknown stuff and criticizes much of what is popular.

I do not even remotely do this. Most of what I like (other than local bands because I'm friends with those people and play shows with them) isn't exactly far from the mainstream. I'm just in a different age group. What was popular when I was in hs during the late 2000's was very different than what was popular in the 70's/80's when a lot of this board was younger.

My favorite Yellowcard album went platinum. Blink 182 had 4 platinum albums, as did Rise Against.

Most of the classic rock I listen to is really popular stuff. My favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chicago, Tower of Power, Pearl Jam, Iron Maiden, you know, reaaaaaaal obscure stuff.

Some of the newer acts I promote on here aren't exactly unknown. Dirty Honey is one of the headliners with their photo on the poster for Beale Street Music Fest. Durand Jones & the Indications is in google commercials, has their music played in grocery stores, and is opening for GVF playing arenas.

I don’t start threads on it.

The one band I remember really having a post similar was me saying that I didn’t “get” REM, and that I wasn’t a huge Pink Floyd guy. I never said those bands SUCKED. Just that I didn’t understand why they appeared to be so much more beloved here than in any other group of music fans I’ve encountered. This board doesn’t have bad taste, it’s just different from what I’m used to.

FWIW: I don’t like synthesizers, fake sounding drum machines, or gated reverb drum sounds. If I don’t like a classic band, it usually is because they use more of those things in their music than I prefer. Those sounds are like nails on a chalkboard to me.

VH is probably the only band I heard that both vocalists are as good (DLR & SH) and as iconic.

Usually when the original vocalist band member leaves, it is hard to match the previous guy, with AC/DC & Survivor probably being the exception.

DLR is all swagger. He’s the ultimate performer and all his songs are about partying and f$&king.

SH has just an incredible voice. His music is all about love, romance, and wanting to make the world a better place.

Most VH fans prefer DLR, but they’re both excellent in their own styles.

But perhaps we forgot about the scintillating poetry of Hot For Teacher.

Not all lyrics have to be serious and poetic. Rock'n'Roll has room for fun and partying too.

Exactly. Imagine being an 11 year old boy in 1984 watching the Hot for Teacher video on Night Tracks for the first time. That was me & I will remember that as long as I will live.
Yes, context and perspective mean so much in these type threads.

For example I saw Rod Stewart as both a "rock and roller" and then as "pop star". Given I was a young punk in the former and a mature dude with bride in tow in the latter I can say I like appreciate both versions.

To come along now and judge him without being there in the moment is rather senseless.

I think you had to have come of age at that time to appreciate how great Van Halen was. They hit the sweet spot for Gen Xers. Their sound was the perfect backdrop from the late 70’s through mid Eighties. Boomers tend to hate them because of how obnoxiously loud we used to crank them from our Blaupunkt speakers back in high school.

Like I said before… VH was a SoCal party band playing hard rock pop songs. What’s not to like. It’s just a different genre than Dua Lipa. Yet, I can find an element of enjoyment in Levitation even if it’s not my thing and the lyrics are lame.

I mean, if you're turning on Van Halen hoping to be enlightened about the meaning of life then you definitely have the wrong idea. Do I like all their songs? No, they are very much hit-or-miss to me. But when they were on, man, they were on.

...although if you can't laugh at this then your heart is made of stone.

It's hard to call what DLR did "singing" but I appreciate his overall frontman style. Does lose something just listening to a song on the radio as opposed to watching a video with him as a performer.

Haggar's voice is incredible.

I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan but they have fun memorable songs and EVH revolutionized an entire instrument - hence in the pantheon of rock history they are far from meh.

You've said it to me 3/4 times. It's truly a terrible thing to say. It's basically calling someone a liar.

You're just encountering the wrong fans. Every music fan I know absolutely loves REM. The only disagreement between us is, when is the cut off? Mine tends to be earlier than most, and it's got nothing to do with being edgy. I think you are intentionally ignoring their body of work. Google this "rem infuential band".

DLR was a character and a great front guy, but a lousy singer and rarely sober. Worst concert I attended was one of theirs when Diamond Dave couldn't remember words, would just stop singing.

Still they had some good songs with him at the forefront. Never say the Van Hagar version live, but I imagine it was a better concert experience than with DLR.
