DLR Van Halen frickin rocked
Sammy just didn't have that same feel though still pretty good. Just didn't quite have that edge that DLR brought

I like the attitude DLR brings to the early catalog, but Hagar brought a new element to the band. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge -- had it not come out months prior to the "Grunge Explosion", would have had status like Appetite for Destruction. Had THAT record come out in 1989 and not 1991, it would have been one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

Invasion tour. Roth came out drunk and stoned out of his mind. Would get two minutes into a song, stop, and the n start yapping forever.

For all I know Sammy Hagar is better than Roth at every single thing in life, with one definite exception: being the lead singer of Van Halen. Roth captured the spirit of that group, and that era, better than anyone else ever could have.
...also, Roth didn’t write “I Can’t Drive (55)”, so he has that going for him as well.

I have owned every album Van Halen ever released. While Hagar is the better singer and I enjoyed his work as a solo artist, Roth era Van Halen is in a class by itself. It has a more raw sound that no one else had in those days and VH was arguably the biggest band in the world in the early/mid 80's. While 5150 and frick were solid albums, other than EVH guitar solos, the music was hard to distinguish from just another run of the mill rock band.

I don't like either "better."
Very different bands. Early Van Halen was raw, in your face rock and roll.
Late Van Halen was more polished and melodic. Dare I say, more mature rock and roll?
Very different and both were great.

Sammy Hagar, Guy Fieri, and Jimmy Buffet are all the same person.

Although work has not changed for me the last 2 months time off has been spent at home for the most part. Over this time I went back and listened to all the VH albums. It's hard to hate on Sammy when the break up wasn't his fault. With that said the first 4 albums were incredible. The Hagar albums are really strong too when time goes by and you listen to them again. I like them all, and have an appreciation for what Sammy did, filling in for the legend, when they were at the 'top of the world' in the music scene. VH was awesome, but I can say Cherone was awful.

Yes. VH 1 and Fair Warning are both better than 1984.
