I got to go with DLR.
Is there a better album than 1984?

David Lee Roth, and it aint even close.
If I had met DLR back in the day, I would have probably ended up knocking his D-bag arse out, but he was a perfect singer for that band and I loved their music. He had a unique ability to be a funny smart arse while singing, and making it sound great. Not very many people can do it.

why is this even a question? It's obviously DLR and anyone saying otherwise is probably just being the contrarian. Just because a band has different lead singers doesn't mean they are equals. Something like 'ac/dc with brian johnson or bon scott'...ok that' a little more a comparison but hell man you may as well ask whose better DLR or gary cherone

The first one is the best. By the time they made ‘84 it was all synthesizers.
I do like this one a lot Jamie’s Cryin

Stupid Q but I will admit I do like Van Hagar. I like his voice

“Why can’t this be love” is a good one.
But ain’t nobody had me hot for teacher!
One of the best drummers in the biz!
Peart, Carey, Lee, Van Halen...

Van Halen had a sense of humor which made them fun.
Van Hagar ruined two great bands.

DLR opening for KISS on the secondary cities markets in spring of 2020

I was always a Dave guy when I was younger and felt Sammy turned them into a sissy band a bit. As I've gotten older, I appreciate Sammy more. It might be because Dave has proven to be a nutcase, while Sammy is a good dude. Dave is obviously the better showman, but I feel like Sammy is the better singer/musician. It's just different styles, that's all.

Personally, I like them with Sammy Hagar better but they definitely had better songs in general when DLR was with them.
I just like Hagar's voice better and he adds something with his guitar.
Their signature songs, though are with DLR and those are the ones that I remember from high school. And I'm not certain they would have been the same with Hagar.
So really I guess my answer is.

I can see that. Maybe Sammy wrote better songs!

Sammy for me. I just enjoyed the material more. I personally thought EVHs best riffs came during that period.

I like Hagar and I don't think the Van Hagar era was bad but I can't see how anyone on earth can think that era was better than DLR era. Roth was the perfect front man for a band in that era. Van Halen's sound demanded a degree of over the topness. You can't get more over the top than David Lee Roth. Over the top outfits, over the top hair, over the top nickname, over the top Ian Gillen/James Brown howls and yelps fit perfectly with an over the top guitarist that played over the top guitars in a band with an over the top image.
Also, while Hagar was a better songwriter than Roth, Roth wrote better Van Halen songs than Hagar. Hagar was a little bit too serious. We are talking about writing songs for Van Halen, not writing songs for U2 or R.E.M..

Meh. Sammy is a much better musician, not a crazy/unstable individual and a better singer over the long haul.
Diamond Dave was just a better frontman for the dysfunction that was classic Van Halen.
But, the OP jumped straight to the end - 1984, which I think is great, but most VH purists don't like, particularly compared to the numbered albums, Diver Down or WACF.
They did some great songs with Dave, though. Eddie is just a miserable, flawed human being whose family barely puts up with his shite. He just also happens to be one of the best guitar players of all time.

I enjoyed parts of both eras. VH would not be VH without DLR but Hagar has a much better voice. I think that VH I and 5150 are great albums

i liked both, DLR was the better front man/entertainer, hager was the better singer. i would personally lean towards hager for the music by a tad

You're a legit fricking retard if you think Hagar was better than DLR.
