I am an OWG...getting ready to turn 50...

I was a kid who was into KISS (don't hate) and then all of a sudden I remember hearing Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me. Became a fan right there and forever in the DLR army.

Was he a great singer? Hell no. Did he remember the lyrics all the time? Hell no. But he was Van Halen...leader...really could get you going wit Runnin with the Devil, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, Mean Streets....but also could do the kitschy stuff also like Ice Cream Man, Happy Trails..

I enjoy Van Hagar for what it is, but Diamond Dave Van Halen is best in my opinion. It just has that edge to it that Van Hagar lacked. I feel like I view Van Hagar songs through a soap opera camera lense. DLR Van Halen sounds like the baddest motherf$&kers from Hell have arrived to f$&k your mom, wife, daughter, and hopefully not the family pet.

He can sing, it is just drowned out by the music and his stage antics. He was more entertainer than singer but that doesn't mean he can't sing.

Said it elsewhere awhile back, but I'd rather buy a ticket to hear DLR sing Happy Trails for 2 hours than to hear any Van Hagar tunes...
