Overrated by who? Cajuns? For sure.

I despised zydeco as a kid and into adulthood. I still don't care for it all that much but it's not so bad at a party or event with a band playing.

I thought it was mostly inspired by African (south African?) music? I only see the zydeco influence on "That Was Your Mother."

It's good to hear in the background somewhere. It sucks in the foreground.

It’s okay for one song a night. Same for reggae. After that, tedium sets in.

Badly tuned accordions and fiddles that all sounds the same.
Then don't listen to it

It was, and the back up musicians & singers were majority African on the album.

I like it more than Blue Grass. And according to Wiki:

He included American "roots" influences with tracks featuring zydeco musicians such as Rockin' Dopsie and Tex-Mex musicians.

I don't find it highly regarded and "rated" to be overrated. I live in the heart of Cajun country and I listen to it here and there. I think the sound comes with age. As a kid, hated it, in my 30's, I like it more. I'm sure when I'm 70 like my dad, it's all I'll listen to. Weather like we've been having, windows down, riding in the country, and put it on the radio, it's a nice time. Working in the shop and need some background music, throw it on. It's an acquired taste. I think people do play it too much to make themselves seem like they're Cajun.

Not overrated. Over played? Repetitive? Yes. But I do enjoy in the right time and place. It’s cool if it’s a live band or being played at a tailgate or Mardi Gras. So basically good if you’re drinking.

I won't listen to it other than live, but it sure is a lot of fun in person.
