Slide playing can offer opportunities for creativity such as sliding into or out of notes or phrases. It gives the player some tools not in his toolbox otherwise. What he makes of those tools and how he uses them is what separates a creative player from a dull one.
While I can't say I am a big fan of it in general, this extended ending of Upward Over The Mountain has really grown on me,

Do you consider Lennon to be a superior musician over Paul?
no one does

Paul is a good bassist and was the best musician technically of the group

That was very nice. For many years I was not a fan of the slide guitar but I've learned to appreciate it in the last couple of decades. There's a lot more to it than most people think.

The same could be said also of steel guitar (pedal, lap, Hawaiian, Dobro, etc.). While there are some similarities to playing a conventional guitar with a slide, it's actually a quite different animal altogether.

This.

"Robert Plant sucks"

This board is heavy with Springsteen hate. It's over the top. So "unpopular" would be Bruce is great!!

There is a difference between a musician who plays drums and a drummer

I've had this opinion ever since I started playing. Some people get it and some don't.
quote:

Solos can be like that, but a guy who keeps a very steady beat, can play all the rhythms and add nice, creative, unique fills to a band's music is worth far, far more than a guy with fast hands/feet, who overplays, gets ahead/behind a lot and basically just shows off on the kit.

An old jazz drummer once said to me, "Son, think about that one drum fill you love to play. You know, the one you execute really well every time. Okay now, the next time you reach a point in a song where you think that fill will work perfectly...don't play it." The context of his point was about discipline and timing. If nothing else, I've developed pretty solid timing over the years.
quote:

That former type of drummer is going to serve a band better than the latter guy who is, frankly, a liability from a musical standpoint, however entertaining he might be to a live audience.

Band members have told me in the past that this was why they chose me over other guys. I'm no Neil Peart by any stretch of the imagination. I'm more of a Phil Rudd/Ringo type and I'm perfectly happy with that role as long as the gigs keep coming...

The idea that older bands are better than newer bands simply because they're older is silly.
