I'll start.

Drum solos are horribly overrated. They usually devolve into noise. And i couldnt tell you if the solo i was listening to sounded good or bad. Drum solos should be 20 seconds long max.

It really depends on the drummer. Some guys just devolve into paradiddling as fast as they can. Other guys have more musical finesse and can actually provide some melody within it. Neil Peart and Gavin Harrison are two that I love to watch solo.

Tedeschi Trucks Band is better in many ways than Derek Trucks Band.

I actually thought this was the prevailing opinion. My issue is that when the guitarist or keyboardist solos, the rest of the band doesn't stop playing so why does the band stop when the drummer solos?

I actually like the effect of the band dropping out and the drums playing and then everything coming back in, but for like a 4 count, not 2 mins haha.

The way Rush does it makes a lot of sense. They play really long shows, so about halfway through, they seque into a Peart solo, when Geddy and Alex can head offstage to get a drink, take leak, whatever. As the drum solo ends, they then return to the stage with acoustic guitars and play a song or two while he gets his break. He then returns and they play for another hour and a half.

That opinion is really only unpopular on this board.

Yeah that's a whole different animal and I like that too. And if drum solos only lasted 2 minutes, I wouldn't have any problem with them. It's the 15 minute noodling sessions that get me. I'd rather the drummer get a bunch of shorter solos with the rest of the band still playing than one extended solo solo.

Duane Allman is overrated. Not his talent, but his contribution to music in general. He wrote one song, and no one but fans know it. The ABB dies with him if not for Dickey Betts.

People get hung up on the name of the band.

That was Betts? Dammit! I learned that part and was all proud of myself for learning something by Duane. Oh well, there's still Little Martha. :)

ETA: He [Duane] died in a motorcycle accident three months before its most famous rendition was recorded. [from Wikipedia]

This is getting off topic but it's an interesting story if true. Supposedly, Leo Kottke heard that song and decided that it was the greatest fingerstyle song ever written and learned how to play it. He was doing a show and learned that Duane was there so decided to incorporate Little Martha into his setlist that night. After the show, Duane came up to him and told him how impressed he was with Leo's version. Then he said, "But Leo, you know that I play that in open E right?" Kottke had played it in standard tuning.

I don't know about that actual music talk

I've always associated Little Martha with Embryonic Journey. I have to think Duane was influenced. Others have noticed it too, and there's this:

quote:

After they left the stage, photos from throughout their career flashed on the screen, with the Jefferson Airplane's "Embryonic Journey" providing the soundtrack. The show ended at 1:30 ET on the morning of October 29th, 2014, the 43rd anniversary of the death of the band's founder, Duane Allman.

Well, that's often what happens when you die unexpectedly at age 24. He was a celebrated session guitarist before he was ever with the Allman Bros (Clarence Carter, Aretha, Wilson Picket, etc., etc.) and his playing and contributions to the ABB were profoundly influential on bands that followed... All by the age of 24... Dickey was a great guitarist and songwriter but he didn't have nearly the chops or influence on blues/rock/jam bands that Duane did.

Duane's influence was so huge that Gregg is still earning a living off of it.

Of course he didn't. He wasn't involved in that at all. He was a country artist

Translation: playing that song in standard is nigh on impossible. If Kottke really did that then he is the GOAT.

Right. And even with a full life not cut short at 24 he hasn't had nearly the impact on music that Duane did. I honestly don't know how Duane's influence/contributions could be overrated. But I guess that's why it's an unpopular opinion. He made the slide guitar cool, he spanned gaps between white and black popular music and his incredible playing in such a short period of time is why the Allman Bros (and their progeny) are still a household name.
