his incredible playing in such a short period of time is why the Allman Bros (and their progeny) are still a household name.
This is objectively false. It's the songs. The songs were Dickey, and to a lesser extent, Gregg. You are doing the very thing that is the cause of Duane's overratedness.

Synthesizers and drum machines suck. They produce tacky sounds that rapidly date music. They also require next to no talent to utilize. Give me real horns, real drums, acoustic guitars, and/or electric guitars with some overdrive, and tell those damn track samplers, synthesizers, drum machinists, auto-tuners, hip-hoppers, rip-rappers, teeny boppers, and EDM twerps to get off my lawn!

Translation: playing that song in standard is nigh on impossible. If Kottke really did that then he is the GOAT.

Oh. I stopped listening to Kottke because of what he did to Classical Gas.

The Monkees >>> Led Zeppelin

"Sugar Sugar" >>> anything by the Grateful Dead

I would rather listen to The Shaggs than any of the screechers (Robert Plant, Freddy Mercury, Geddy Lee, Mickey Thomas, and whoever sings for Boston and Journey)

Phish
Widespread Panic
The Greatful Dead
Grand Funk Railroad
Styx
Journey

The Lumineers
Kanye West
Neil Young

The following bands straight up suck:
Drake

Robert Palmer
Huey Lewis
Panic at the Disco
Fallout Boy
Duran Duran

Come at me bro.

Every single rock fan knows his slide work on Layla.

In addition to his influence on Dickie Betts and Gary Rossington, he showed Don Felder a thing or 2, particularly about slide. He was also an important session musician at Muscle Shoals.

The reason folks use the medicine bottle type glass slides is because of Skydog.

He's THE definitive slide player in rock history.

While probably all true, that doesn't support an argument against overrated.

It kind of does actually. You said his contributions (not his talent) are overrated and you were presented with numerous reasons why his contributions were vast and numerous - not to mention he was able to contribute that much to the music world in such a ridiculously short period of time. What exactly is your standard for overrated?

THIS IS NOT MY OPINION, but I've seen this debate:

Sammy Hagar > David Lee Roth

Jeff Beck is the greatest rock guitarist in history, above all else.

I heartily disagree. Perfect music for chilling at the lake or the beach.

My unpopular opinions:
Wilco and LCD Soundsystem are overrated.
McCartney's post-Beatles career is better than Lennon's.
John Denver is awesome.
