Not really what I’d consider powerpop, but what a jam. Never heard of anyone else who knew it.

Not sure why you would say that, as it seems to meet all the requirements. From their Wiki page:
quote:

"The yearning lyrics and melody, vibrant jangling guitars and brisk propulsive beat [Add harmony and you've got PP - K] all combine to make The Squires' 'Going All the Way' a transcendent rock n roll record. That the song wasn't a huge hit and isn't heard daily on today’s 'oldies' or 'classic rock' radio stations is shameful - but when it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter. The fact that 'Going All the Way' is little more than a secret, known only to a few thousand fanatics, only adds to its greatness. Success can be measured in terms other than units sold, and with "Going All the Way" The Squires succeeded in ways that much wealthier musicians failed."

The mode and subject matter don’t seem poppy to me. Seems more protopunk like the stooges.

I was more trying to give a nod to a good track than debate the genre. I rarely see it mentioned. Nice taste.

Seven pages and no Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away ..or did I miss it?

Southern Girls, Solar Sister, Radiation Vibe, Alex Chilton, An American Girl, What's He Got, etc..definitely are on my power pop playlists.

Inspired by a news article of a young lady found dead, I don’t think there is anything about the song that would be considered pop music.

Pop just means popular (melody based) and power means guitar based/driven. That is my understanding anyway. So a dark song could qualify but not a dance number.

even by the loosest definitions, there is nothing about that song or STP that is power pop...

That could be said about half the suggestions in this thread

Power Pop, like a rockabilly, is a genre with relatively well-defined limits. It's essentially the garage band sound with harmonies (instead of a snarling R&B-inspired solo vocal) at least on the chorus, and jangling guitars (instead of power chords). This definition can serve as a foundation even though I'm sure there are PP classics that skirt with violating it (in some the guitars don't jangle much)

Yeah, these threads always devolve pretty quickly.... most of the time I just ignore the suggestions, but that was one I just couldn't abide..
