The title of the song is questionable. Southern cross could be a burning cross.
Can't tell what's an attempt at humor in here sometimes, but... You do know The Southern Cross is a constellation used by sailors sometimes to navigate the open ocean in the southern hemisphere, don't you?

Stills lived in Covington for a bit and went to LSU.

Despite all the craziness of the last two weeks I’ll still play this song at least twice a week. A true sailors song

"Sign of the Southern Cross" > "Southern Cross."

I agree. And it is so much better than if Neil Young had stayed with the group.

When Nash and his wife were divorcing, he took a boat out in the Caribbean (southern Atlantic?) and wrote this song.
It’s a beauty.
Fave line from all CSN songs is in this song:
We never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do

Stills' family lived in what is now Lincoln Parish area prior to Civil War. His g-g-g or g-g grandfather served in the Civil War. They later moved up to Illinois I think.
I often wondered if his ancestor might have served at Manassas, hence the naming of one of his albums.
Stills also had a restaurant in New Orleans, maybe Toucan Du.
I heard or read about his time at LSU, mostly playing in marathon card (boure?) games with his pals.

I believe the name of the band in the Baton Rouge area back in the 80s/90s was called Stormy .... they did a great job with this song.

I've loved the CSN version since it came out. Just a great classic song.
This is the original song written by Rick and Michael Curtis. It was recorded at Sound City around 75 with Lindsey Buckingham co-producing and Stevie Nicks singing backgrounds, just about the time they were starting with Fleetwood Mac.
According to Stills, "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce. It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it."

Coincidence--just learned it this weekend on the guitar. I'm an old hippie who wanted nicer things back into a CSN rotation. Lol
