I'll take Athens' finest FTW.

Widespread Panic wasn't one of the choices. :)

I'll take REM too though.

Wait....what?

You heard me. They do well on just about any metric: long, successful career. Incredibly influential on future bands. Incredibly popular. Fairly unique. Amazing peak (Paul's Boutique).

I'd still take REM, but the Beasties are in the photo.

Sure. CCR's in the conversation. So are the Beastie Boys. No, really. But they are the defining band of "alternative" rock. They invented a genre. Hence the word "arguably". They are on the very short list of greatest American rock bands.

I agree they created a genre but are they "rock"?

And I woudl tend to agree that bruce is more of a solo artist, but several of his albums have the "band" attached.

Personally i would go with the beach boys. granted much of their stuff is sub par, but they have an incredible catalog, were together for a long time, and pet sounds is definitely one of the best albums of all time.

Of course. How is that even a question?

My dad, upon hearing REM for the first time (I think I was listening to Reckoning), asked me when did I start listening to country music?

Wow

I do love King of The Road. I can see that being said after hearing Rockville.

I'm still bitter over the results of the last one. Depeche Mode over the Smiths just makes no sense to me.

I grew up more in the 90's, and had a lot of the earlier Smashing Pumpkins. But they really fizzled out after Mellon Collie.

To me REM has a more impressive body of work, and the better overall albums. Automatic For the People, and Murmur are better than anything the Smashing Pumpkins have produced.

REM
