Fan of both. I pick REM, but why oh why did you use one of their worst songs ever as an example? Their first 4 full albums and the EP stand up to anyone. The rest is vomitous.

This is the blowout of blowouts. Pumpkins are a decent 90s band with a few great songs. REM is arguably the greatest American rock band. This isn't even a contest. REM by a mile.

I tend to agree with your sentiment, but i think you might lose the argument as them being the greatest american rock band.
I think most would push the doors. Greatful dead could have a claim. Metallica, Beach Boys, and Bruce Springsteen and the E street band might all be in the conversation.

Sure. CCR's in the conversation. So are the Beastie Boys. No, really. But they are the defining band of "alternative" rock. They invented a genre. Hence the word "arguably". They are on the very short list of greatest American rock bands.
I tend to think of Bruce as a solo artist, though. No offense to Clarence.
