For better or worse, The Eagles in the 70s were a real band. They went from 4 to 5 and then changed out 2 people. That really didn't change for over 25 years after that (hiatus and all).
Chicago was, too, but "Chicago" is almost too big a topic. You had the whole horn section - hell, there have been almost 3 dozen members of Chicago.
Boston was a studio project that got sold to the record company as a band. Then, they had to form one.
Steely Dan, particularly after the first couple of albums, was more of a semi-abstract musical project posing as a band.
For me, clearly the Eagles are #1 and Boston is #2. I'm not denying the talent and influence of Chicago or Steely Dan and I do enjoy most of their hits and many deep cuts.
As a topic, though, you picked 4 very interesting and quite different "bands". Each one could be (and have been IIRC) the subject of long threads on this board.

1. Boston
2. Chicago (this would have been my number one, but their 80’s content is just so bad)
3. The Eagles
4. Steely Dan (It’s all technically brilliant, but I just don’t find the music catchy or energetic enough for me)

Chicago I played trumpet, like horn sections, some complexity, and Terry Kath.
Boston I was the right age for that album and was ready for a shift from bluesy rock to majors, minors, and mixolydian.
The Eagles They're narrowly a favorite. Adding Joe and then Timothy was a big improvement.
Steely Dan I love a good bit of it but have to skip too much of it.

I love Boston! However, I feel their lack of time (number of albums, etc.) prevents them from being rated anywhere near the other three.

My ranking was based strictly on sound enjoyment not career

Chicago up to VII (even though VIII was ok)..the last 2 Kath albums were miserable then after that it was elevator music as Cetera took over)
Steely Dan (discounting Gaucho & Everything Must Go).
Boston (only 2 good albums)
Eagles

quote:the one cool thing about The Eagles is they had a "The" name in the era of bands w/no definite article
Name of the band is “Eagles”, not “The Eagles”
and now you've taken even that from them

Could flip Chicago and the Eagles. They're both very good bands. Eagles made hay out of one sound, for the most part. It was a pretty good sound at times, but a bit onenoted to me.

Love all 4 bands. Saw Steely Dan open for the Eagles a few years ago at MSG, before their Sphere run.
Then I saw the current version of Chicago recently on their current tour.
Never saw Boston.
