No shite, you misunderstand, or I poorly stated. All music is derivative - everything is derivative, but sometimes someone comes along and does something a little different, a little twist - that's the artist, that's who is an influence.

I really liked the Lou Barlow era of Dino, but I'd have to go with Pixies. Nothings Shocking by JA is a fine album, but I always thought they & Perry Farrell were overrated.

Sugar Hill was the first to do rap music. . .I'd still rather listen to Rakim.
And I would say that Rakim was more important to the genre.
Pixies were a great band that kicked off the grunge scene, and were very influential in modern rock. It doesn't mean that bands since aren't flat out better.

Mission of Burma is a clear influence of the Pixies.
I don't think the Pixies are the first LOUDquietLOUd band, but they sure did perfect the formula. And their influence extends far past the grunge era. Oh, and their albums kick arse, even removed from their obvious influence of future bands.
And the best Pixies ripoff song is Radiohead's Creep.
