Those are just popular bands from the 90s that influenced the likes of Limp bizkit, nickelback, 3 doors down and a whole host of shitty popular bands that followed.

But I guess it's what you like.

To music that matters, yes. To pop radio alternative rock stations, no.

I can, but of the original list I think Dinosaur Jr. is equally influential

I disagree, there are a few good albums, every indie rock afficionado has 1 or 2, professes his love....blah, blah....Out of Dinosaur Jr. though came Lou Barlow who founded Sebadoh who I think ignited the whole 4-track, bedroom music you see so much today.

not literally unknown, but there are bands like flaming lips, sonic youth, wilco, etc... that no matter how many times they are played on mtv, they are not in the popular vein of music. you wont walk through a high school and see those hoodies on girls.

MTV stopped playing music 15 years ago.

To be fair I also don't like any of the bands you listed earlier other than Beck although I do enjoy Wilco and flaming lips. I do agree that the Pixies and Dino Jr. were extremely influential and I also find that a lot of people that listen to those bands are musicians like myself and that probably has a lot to do with it.

if you think that limp bizkit, 3 doors down and nickleback are the best bands to have emerged since soundgarden started then you have your head in the sand.

i dont listen to any of the same music as most of you. im standing across a gully and looking at your music, saying its shite, and you are looking back at mine and saying its shite. thats fine, its just what we like and its different.

i had a guy i worked with who loved the pixies and i listened to them all the time. i didnt like them, but i listened to a lot of them. he was always feeding me velvet underground, stooges, pixies, and even sabbath. those who know me can attest that i never really listened to sabbath until 5-10 years ago. so i definitely spent time checking these bands out and letting the albums play.

even if you are a massively successful, barreling down the tracks band, when you first heard reznor, patton, and even maynard, it made them take notice. george carlin had a line about comedians that he only changed his act when he heard someone do something that made him take a step back. he said kennison made him change his act. but carlin was already a star when that happened. so the bands i mentioned arent just influential to people who are yet to make a band, they are just as easily influential to people already making music.

Song for song I'd have to go with Jane's first.

Self titled through Ritual were absolutely brilliant. Ritual,IMO is one of the most epic albums of all time. The lyrics, arrangements, production,Navarro's sound. It's a huge album.

Daydream Nation is one of my favorite alt.rock albums of all time. It's up there with Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.

Knowing I missed the boat on them, I spent some time trying to like them. My conclusion was, they make terrible albums as a whole. They also have some of my favorite songs of all time. Dirty Boots, Teenage Riot and The Diamond Sea are songs I absolutely love. Too much unlistenable noise on the albums as a whole though. Goo is the only album they have that I even call good.

The only correct answer is The Replacements.

Dinosaur jrs discography overall is very good when compared to the other two. He'll their last two albums that came out over the past 6 years are as gold as their first two in the early 80s. That says a lot.

They were grunge before grunge existed. My vote is for them.

It appears lots of people believe themselves to be music experts, but don't understand art.

No...you don't get it. There's nothing unique about Soundgarden - they were garden variety heavy metal (grunge). NIN actually probably has influenced some bands and Reznor has had his hands in a number of other projects. But Faith No More???? They were a sort've Red Hot Chili Peppers rip off in the 90s. They weren't bad, but once again they weren't unique. The thing is you can hear that grunge sound in every crappy alt-rock station. Honestly the most influential singer (in a bad way) is Eddie Vedder - I think after Pearl Jams success nearly every shitty band had a singer that sounded like him.

They have that Soundgarden, Faith No More je ne sait quoi....there are more. Just poor rip offs of bands that really weren't that unique. You can argue good but not unique.

I don't think your music taste is shitty...it's just not very interesting.

No evidence that any of those bands you cite other than Reznor did that. Faith No More and to be honest this is the one that stands out the most in your group, is the least influential band because they were a knock off of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - a truly influential band.

That's because it's the original lineup with Lou Barlow and Murph

Yep. I imagine a lot of shitty bands had the Pixies, Stones, Beatles, Dylan as their influence.

Take your off topic music snob crap to another thread.

No band is completely unique, and if you disagree, name one "Unique" band and I'll give you at least one that sounds similar. All bands have their influences that somehow come out in their music.

The grunge era was a great period of time for American music, especially since it got us away from those shitty glam rock days of the 80s. No, Soundgarden may not have been God's gift to music but they were talented and wrote some good albums.

NIN shouldn't be involved in this (off-topic) discussion since they aren't anything like the other bands mentioned.
