Add "That I've heard a good amount from". I have not heard enough of Winger and Hanson to judge, but Mmm Bop is less painful to my ears than anything by NIN and AIC with the exception of possibly the songs not sung by Staley who is the most painful singer to me ever.

Why does it matter what genre NIN is in? Why do genres matter at all? If you're so close minded to only listen to something that the mass has grouped into a certain genre, then it's laughable to comment on how "good" a band is. In the end, it's all relative. Arguing with others on what bands are "good" or which bands suck is pointless. People have their own preferences...there is no right and wrong...unless it's Nickelback. They are the exception.

Not to mention that there is no real definition of rock music. . .much less one that would exclude NiN.

I can appreciate how good NIN, AIC and Radiohead are. I never really got RATM.
Weezer is probably my favorite band of that whole time period.
NONE of them are really even close to PIXIES. I'm pretty sure Rivers Cuomo would laugh if anyone suggested his band might be anywhere near as good or important as Pixies.
eta: You could certainly argue that Radiohead may have produced greater "art" in the sense that their albums tend to stand as unified works. That would be a legit point, I just like Pixies better (as do many, many others).
