Pop music is any music made for the mass audience. It typically tends to be more simplistic and catchy so that it can appeal to a large number of people. Much but not all of it is dance music. It changes over time to fit whatever the "popular" trends are.

As for the Nirvana example, it started off as counter pop and then ironically as it grew in popularity it helped to set what the popular trend for that time period and became part of the pop music of that time. Bands that followed it were probably more "pop" because they took that style and made it more accessible to the masses. These would be your Pearl Jam or Foo Fighters, etc.

What makes pop is determined in large part by the setting. There was a time when some Jazz was pop. However, the more experimental and complex styles never really could be considered pop because they were not accessible to the masses.

And Bon Jovi most certainly was pop.

I love my children.

But if I have to hear Demons one more time on way to school I dont know what will happen.

On a side note: Katy Perry really doesnt bother me.

Pearl Jam and fricking Foo Fighters are not even in the same stratosphere. PJ was not an output of Nirvana, by any stretch of the imagination.

It's all pop music. We're not listening to jazz (well, some of you are). Of course Pearl Jam is a pop group. Pop music's hallmarks are simple structures, short songs (3-5 minutes usually), verse/chorus format, lyrically driven (very rarely do instrumental tunes ever chart), and aimed at the youth market. Let's not get haughty and pretend this isn't all pop music.

But some of it clearly sucks. Stuff that has no artistic merit whatsoever, and is just somebody pushing product and moving units ins't really fun... it's blandly corporate shite. There is so much out there, why waste my time with that? I don't look down on people who listen to that stuff, but I also don't really consider them music fans. Not everyone is.

Meh, shitty music is like pornography. I can't define it exactly, but I know it when I hear it. Imagine Dragons, Fun., Modern Pop Country, these are all qualifiers.

You are thinking of things in way too specific links than my intention. In broad strokes PJ became part of the alt pop of the late 90's. They were a heavier style of pop. Are you really going to argue that the late 90's didn't follow the early 90's?

Your comment is purely based upon the idea that apparently you think PJ is much better than Foo Fighters. You therefore show that you missed the entire point of the post to which you responded.
