Many of the bandmembers were greatly influenced by southern blues. That's why they played many southern venues that they had probably outgrown. Led Zepp and others

Yes many were influenced with southern blues but in 1977 the Maravich Assembly Center was only 5 years old and held a capacity of 13,000 plus. It was probably one of the better venues at the time. It's not like they were playing at the Warehouse in New Orleans which a lot of legendary bands did and it only held a capacity around 3,000.

that sounds like an amazing time

What do we have left in south Louisiana for rock/ metal concerts? An occasional band comes to the varsity?

I saw Led Zeppelin and the Who (have super 8 film I took/shot) in 75 at the PMAC.

Around 72-73 I saw Jethro Tull, Neil Young and some others at the PMAC. The opening band for Neil Young was was Linda Ronstadt

Missed ELP, Moody Blues, Rolling Stones and a lot of others at the PMAC.

The Stones opened up their world tour at the PMAC. See the Rolling Stone article "The Rolling Stones’ 1975 Tour: Baptized in Baton Rouge, Castrated in San Antone"

Years ago someone on TD posted a link to files in some LSU archives with various tracks from LZ's concert here. Not great quality but interesting.

No, I don't have the links.

I once saw a picture of Elvis on the stage at BRHS from 1955. That was pretty cool because I went to school there. I’ve read that Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Sr., and a lot of other famous musicians played there.

They played in 75 too I think.

They did. I overindulged before the concert and passed out inside the PMAC missing the entire show. Not my greatest moment as a teenager.

Johnny Rivers attended Baton Rouge High in the late 1950s.

Known for different songs, but I best remember Secret Agent Man.

I know JS had a lot of political power back then, but who knows.

You may be right, it could have been that Ossie Brown made a political decision and pressure from Swaggart and the Christian Right had a lot to do with it. But Ossie Brown was the very visible driving force.

I was new to Baton Rouge in '82. Shortly after getting there the Police and J Geils put on a couple of excellent shows in the Centroplex. After that the big concerts died and the doors might as well have been padlocked.

Seemed like they used to get big names alot. Almost as if the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash scared everyone off.

AC/DC had an early 80’s concert in the Centroplex with a lot of fights and Ossie Brown convinced the Metro Council to pass a big tax on large venue concert production companies which added to the acts not returning to BR but also other venues opened around that time, Lakeview Arena and the Cajundome which are similar in size. And of course later the New Orleans Arena. LSU had a student committee when I was there that worked with local production companies-Montel being one (SJ Montelbano and his brother Mickie) to aggressively book acts but that group dismantled for whatever reason.

Jimmy Swaggart even at his early mid 80’s peak never had political influence in Baton Rouge. What he did do was help keep the local economy going during the recession I believe 86-87 by continuing to build his campus until he got caught with his pecker out.

I saw Three Dog Night and the Doobie Brother at Independence Hall which was a quansit hut building located where the Claiborne Building is and it had the Whitehouse Inn next door with an underground tunnel leading to it.

Saw Yes in the Round at Assembly Center. We would get dropped off when we were 12 at whatever venue had a concert and another parent would come pick us up around midnight when it was over. Anyone let there 12 year old do that now?

I saw their last Dallas concert - front row tickets. It was awesome (though at the time I didn't appreciate enough)
