NuMetal is the most egregious assault on music since it's inception.

It seems like one day it was Alice in chains, Soundgarden, STP, Pearl jam, etc. Then fricking Korn and Fred Durst. I feel like NuMetal ruined everything, just in general.

I've personally never understood the appeal of downtuned 7 string guitars.

To lead off the movement, You had Fred Durst doing a cover of a George Michael song and dropping an F bomb. We knew our parents and teachers would hate it and not want us to listen to it, so it felt rebellious at the time.

There's good and bad in every genre. Korn, Linkin Park, and Slipknot are some of the biggest metal bands of all time for good reason. Korn is one of the most innovative bands in rock history.

It signified a shift from bands started by older GenXers to younger GenXers. It must have to do with slightly different musical influences. My theory is that hip hop/rap started to negatively impact the genre. And I would add that rap is the most egregious assault on music in history.

I listen for the pure nostalgia. But I gravitate more to the bands that had a lasting effect. I mean I prefer rock/metal that does not have that hip-hop/rap influence. But some of it is good.
But it really has not aged well. No new bands are performing Nu Metal. Most are doing other things. Only Korn can get away with it.

I can’t stand Korn, just way too weird for my tastes. I respect them for what a huge innovation their style was, but I don’t enjoy listening to them.
Limp Bizkit is fun party music when you’re drunk, but not meant to be taken seriously. It’s the unpretentious version of Rage Against the Machine.
Slipknot is great music that holds up and was a huge influence on most of the metal being made today.
It’s not like the 2000’s was bereft of good grunge-esque bands: Audioslave, Alter Bridge, Seether, Shinedown, Chevelle, etc. Nu Metal was huge, but far from the only game in town.
Limp Bizkit is fun party music when you’re drunk, but not meant to be taken seriously. It’s the unpretentious version of Rage Against the Machine.

Slipknot is the biggest band in metal today outside of Metallica. Deftones have found a new popularity with the younger crowd on tiktok. Mudvayne is bigger than ever since they've come back. Limp Bizkit and Korn are still going strong. The Sick New World festival sold out in minutes. Nu metal is arguably stronger today than it was in its prime.

None of these bands would be considered Nu Metal, which helps them. None of them have hip-hop/rap influences. They're more influenced by rock and metal musicians of different areas. I know in the case of Alter Bridge, Myles Kennedy is influenced by Jazz. Steely Dan is his favorite band.

I reserve that "honor" for the talentless and seemingly endless void that is hip-hop.
Numetal sucked, but at least it contained itself and ended. Hip-hop has continued to devolve from day one and has spread to every remaining musical genre save maybe classical.

Think of the bands you're saying. All made a huge impact. The ones that were huge will always be a draw. Not many are lining up to see Drowning Pool and other second rate bands from that time.

Mudvayne was never anywhere near as popular in their first run as they are today. Tiktok is exposing the younger kids to bands like Deftones and Limp Bizkit, keeping them as big names. You don't see that with with older metal like thrash or the more classic bands like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, etc. Those are all nostalgia acts with old fanbases.

These band members were mostly in their 20s when in their musical prime, yet they continue to stay big. My question is where are the bands currently in their 20s? Am I just too old to know who they are, or do they even exist?
