I’m pretty out of touch, but even I know these bands. With the segmentation of the music media market post-streaming revolution, it’s really difficult for rock bands to break as big as they could back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. For those who do manage to find success, they often have to grind for a really long time to get it unless they have nepotism behind them or are a straight up industry plant.
Gone are the days when bands would get noticed by label scouts after a handful of shows around their hometown, release an album a year later, and within 2 years of founding the band be headlining a world tour.

I hate nu metal, but Korn gets a pass. They transcended the subgenre.

I hate numetal too but it's far from being the most egregious assault on music since it's inception in the mid-90's.

Korn has always been unbelievable and helped me survive my teenage years. They’re still pumping out solid music. Slipknot is an unstoppable machine it would seem. But I’m embarrassed I ever owned a limp bizkit cd

I’d say most of those bands are pop punk not really nu metal

Dirty Honey is just an old fashioned hard rock band. I’ve heard of Nothing But Thieves, but none of the rest.

Sleep Token and Bad Omens blew up big last year. They're two of the biggest up and coming hard rock bands right now.

Yungblud, Story So Far, Hot Mulligan, and Belmont are definitely pop punk the others can possibly be seen as nu-metal

I don’t think that he was saying that they were nu metal.

I was not.

Nirvana is the most egregious offender. Singing well and being proficient at your instruments became passe.

Nirvana wasn’t any worse at that than most of the punk and hardcore bands of the late 70’s and 80’s. The difference was that Cobain was a better songwriter, and he had genius level marketing from David Geffan behind him at a time when the public was starving for something new. I think Kurt Cobain is a much better singer than most give him credit for. He doesn’t have the high range like a Steven Tyler, Steve Perry, or Freddie Mercury, but he has a great sweet spot in that growling baritone.
People who hate Nirvana because bands stopped wanking off with guitars in the 90’s should just go ahead and consummate their marriage to an 80’s charvel already by insemination the input jack with tone jizz.

I loved Limp Bizkit as a kid, and I still enjoy their music 20 something years later. Not something that I listen to much, but when I do I enjoy it. Nostalgia plays a big part, but I think that there music is genuinely pretty interesting, especially Wes Borland's guitar playing.

No new bands are performing Nu Metal. Most are doing other things.
I think the limiting aspect of nu metal is that there really is nowhere else you can go with it without moving into another already existing genre. Nothing about "nu" metal was actually new. Angsty songs were a 90's calling card. Very loud and aggressive metal and hardcore music had been a thing for a while. Combining rapped lyrics and hip hop musical elements with hard rock was RATM's calling card. Nu metal simply mixed together all of those elements and overlaid them with pop hooks to make them more palatable. But there is nowhere else to really take that model without changing what it is completely. If you try to make it angrier and harder and less poppy then it devolves back into hardcore or grindcore (Slipknot or Fear Factory). If you try to make it less hip hoppy then it merges back into prog metal (Deftones, who was never nu metal to begin with anyway). If you try to make it less metal then it becomes 90's industrial (Gravity Kills or Stabbing Westward). Basically nu metal is not a genre you listen to and think, "What a cool sound! You could really do some interesting things with that." It defines itself completely.

I agree: a lot of rock and metal incorporates hiphop like nu metal did, but they’re not under the nu metal label. Metalcore has rapping and trap beats all over the place these days. Falling in Reverse is probably the closest thing to nu metal that isn’t nu metal today.
If you want a new nu metal band, try Vended. It’s literally Slipknot.

You certainly don't need to be Freddie Mercury or Steve Perry to lead a successful group. Vince Neil can't sing worth a shite and look how popular the Crue is. Lemmy Kilmeister had no vocal range but Motorhead is obviously popular as well. Brian Johnson from AC/DC sings like he's gargling rocks but it worked well for them and they're legends in the rock genre.

It signified a shift from bands started by older GenXers to younger GenXers. It must have to do with slightly different musical influences. My theory is that hip hop/rap started to negatively impact the genre. And I would add that rap is the most egregious assault on music in history.

Deftones' uniqueness lies in Chino Moreno's vocals—which can go from soft and melodic to chaotic and angry—as well as the diversity of the band's influences, among them The Cure, Bad Brains, Duran Duran, Ice Cube, and The Smiths.

Alice In Chains picked up on the moodier end of '60s and '70s rock—Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and The Doors—while also mixing the intensity and anger of the Stooges and Sex Pistols into their sound.

Gonna have to disagree there. I was in high school when Korn's first album came out. Nothing sounded like them. Their guitar tone, bass sound, lyrical themes, etc was clearly distinct from RATM, Faith No More, or whatever bands you want to compare nu metal too. Korn was completely original for its time.
