Seems he is fully embracing his wokeness.

What a condescending a-hole.

quote:

I’d like to be able to say, ‘I did what I could, I did part of what I could,’ or you know, something that’s not just, ‘Well, I had records to sell, so I kept my mouth shut.’ I’ll never lose sleep over not selling more records, but I’ll definitely lose sleep over keeping my mouth shut and letting things happen to people who are minorities for whatever reason, be it gender or their race or their sexual preference or the fact that they ‘like science.’”

His former band Drive By Truckers is not dialing it down either.

No T&P for them

Shame on him for standing up for what he believes in.

Later, Isbell pointedly criticizes artists for not speaking their minds more forcefully: "If your words add up to nothing / Then you're making a choice to sing a cover when you need a battle cry."

Sorry. He is an a-hole. I’ve got no problems with his politics or whether or not he sings about them. I’ve got a problem when he looks down on others for not doing what he chooses to do. I also have a problem with his attitude towards those who have different political beliefs than his. That makes them racist or ignorant.

Musicians have always been political, and left leaning for that matter, but for some reason Isbell’s newfound method of interjecting it into everything really irks me. I prefer his love and drug songs personally. Also who the hell is marginalized because they “like science?” What a dumb frick.

That’s a clue towards his mindset and how he feels about people. He thinks he’s being cute. I don’t know a single person that denies climate change. However if you disagree on the reasons why and what can help that makes you a dumb ignorant redneck who doesn’t like science.

It was really weird when he kissed his husband on stage

Lmao. What’s a shame is how God awful his music is now. Heard the song the OP is referencing today and it’s a pile of dog shite. His enlightenment destroyed his creativity ability.

They’re coming to the Ryman- saw it listed and passed. Saw them three times years ago before the Isbell route. It’s not even so much about the politics it’s that their new music sucks.

Prior to this one, he's had one overtly political/social issue song - White Man's World. The bulk of his songs are about love, drugs, drinking and recovery. But write him off for his two political/social issue songs you don't agree with him on I guess, snowflake.

I love Isbell but I find this new song whiney and preachy. Some of the other song titles are not promising either.

The last album wasn’t great, either. It had a few good tunes. Tupelo, Cumberland Gap, and Anxiety but it’s been downhill for Jason since Southeastern.

Luckily for him he’s banging one hot arse whore of a woman. .

Swell. Just what the world needs - another protest singer singing a protest song.

His Live from Alabama record and Southeastern were great. Live from Alabama largely because it was a greatest hits on steroids album and Southeastern because it was his once in a career album.

His last two have had a few great songs, a lot of so so songs, and several bad/annoying songs.

We're all expecting Southeastern every time now, so new records seem like a let down.

A friend posted a link to the new song on FB and I checked it out yesterday and wasn't a huge fan, even without paying attention to the lyrics - it was too "rocked up" for my taste. I like JI - love Cover Me Up, Flying Over Water, Last of My Kind, Tupelo, just to name a few - but just not digging the sound from him on this song.

Hopefully this isn't released as the lead track because it is the "best," because that will make for a disappointing album.
