American Girl by Tom Petty didn't chart after its initial release, but did years later when Petty released a Greatest Hits album. My theory is that Silence of the Lambs was part of that. Always think of that movie when I hear it.

Probably was big without Risky Business, love Seger but this song stinks

I wouldn't say that it "stinks." It's cheesy sure, but not a bad song. But it is nowhere near as good as Seger's other stuff.

I wouldn't say this song is mediocre - I actually like it quite a bit - but I will say that probably none of us would have ever heard of it had it not been in one particular movie in one particular scene:

I dont' know about movies but was The Sopranos the reason Don't Stop Believing is more popular now than when it was released? Was it a hit in the 80's? It never hit #1 but had a lot of airplay, but then forgotten.

Don't You Forget About Me.

The song was written for the movie and initially the producers approached Chrissy Hynde to do it but she was like 7-8 month pregnant so she suggested they approach Kerr from Simple Minds

It was so average according to Jim Kerr that he initially wanted to pass.

Made extra famous by being played during the infamous Phoebe Cates pool scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High

I've never watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Moving in Stereo is a much better song than Fast Times is a movie.

Danger Zone from Top Gun.
Would not have been the same song without that movie at all.

I mean, it was created specifically for the movie, sooooo.....

Other than that song, you might recognize Tom from his vocals on "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider.

Two songs that everyone has always assumed were recorded by the artists that were being ripped off. Lunatic Fringe was always the most MOR Pink Floyd song on the radio.

Yup. I looked it up not long ago and play it from time to time. Would have never heard it otherwise.

Yeah, they broke through with "Walking on the Sun" and then you couldn't shake those guys for a couple of years.

Yeah then they were forgotten until the infamous Colorado loaves of bread incident in 2015.

So you agree it's mediocre then and it disappeared from about 1982 until mid 2000's. Now you can't not hear everywhere and at every karaoke and every sporting event.

I also agree with Kafka about Bohemian Rapsody. It was popular after the initial release and disappeared with scant airplay on classic rock stations. It peaked higher on the charts after Wayne's World than it did during initial release.
