kind of the point I was trying to make. To be honest, I've never really gotten into Mumford & Sons too much. I can stand them, but, for whatever reason, never really got too excited about them.
BUT, I'm not going to bash the genre because it's gotten popular.

totally understandable. music is all about what you enjoy. for the most part, this board has been very open to others' tastes. but a select few posters on here believe their music taste is far greater than anyone else...and that's cool, but it comes off as pompous, IMO.

True but this genre just so happens to be the flavor of the week so those mediocre to bad bands are getting more exposure as of late.
Every genre has that problem during their popularity but the truth is its not that dire of a problem and is easily avoidable.

Just so I know to the people who think so, who is in the genre that is mediocre to bad?
I can understand how people may be tired or bored w/ Mumford, but they're far from mediocre by pretty much any objective standard. Good songwriting, unique (if repeated) sound, no assistance from synths, good instrumentalists, good live...
To be honest I think that is the best thing about the genre. Most of these bands made it "organically" (some hipster shite to say), and are therefore really good musicians that can play live.

Being a group of talented musicians and being a talented band are two different things.
I think Mumford and sons are mediocre because after one album I was bored with them. A one and done band is mediocre. I think the lumineers are mediocre because, well quite frankly because I don't like them.
I can't think of more off the top of my head because I don't really delve to deep into the genre. I have some bands from it that I enjoy but it seems like every other day I'm hearing another up coming band trying to be the next Mumford and sons.

I'm not going to dog your opinion of them, but I don't think that makes them a mediocre band. Clearly a lot of people like them, and although I agree they'll be challenged by the "sounds the same" critique, part of that is the result of producing a lush, layered sound that is uncommon. Ditto for Lumineers.
Basically, if a band writes its own music and it isn't bad, plays instruments well, puts on a good life performance, has good vocalist(s), etc., I'll give them some credit even if it isn't my bag. I think it is necessary to do that considering there are bands that fit this description which I hate, but which are more deserving of praise and success than 95% of what is out there.

Thats fine. I certainly dont expect everyone to share my opinion and maybe mediocre is the wrong word.

Same here. Personally think its awful but to each his own. That's one of the great things about music, lots of variety to appeal to different folks.

Problem is, like any genre, the industry is going to cannabalize the actual talent in it to chase the almighty dollar. Typically that means chasing the 17 year old girl audience- with this one though its managed to hit hipsters with its odd instruments and questionable style, and the 17 year old girl's soft rock listening parents.
While I love a couple of the bands that really kicked the door down (decemberists and ocms being two mentioned here), the bands that are in turn sprinting through that now open door seem lackluster at best.
Is there talent? Sure thing. Has it turned towards top 40 sales and away from art creation? Of course, that's how music works. I'm not running out to buy the CDs but ill hum a few of the tunes at my desk and not beat up those that do buy.

Nickelback and creed are among my favorite grunge bands!
(Obviously not, but there's an element of that with this genre currently - wooooo Mumford and lumineers)

Agreed. Nothing wrong with that and ill be the first to give credit for a great pop song but.... I think that the standard being argued by their biggest supporters amounts to "they play their instruments serviceably and write their songs." They aren't going to turn things upside down - they are essentially top 40, formula driven, soft rock. Ill hum some tunes, have a guilty pleasure one or two of them but generally their goal is simply "be a little catchy and don't offend." Mom, dad, and kids can all pull from the newer breakout CDs happily
