To me, these were the albums when these bands peaked. Which is better? My vote is RIP. The reason: better bass and drums. Dave Ellefson so much better than Newsted and bass was actually integral to most songs. You can actually hear the bass and it was featured in sections and songs (Dawn Patrol). Lars was like, “just turn the bass down when mixing the tracks.” Lars is not a creative drummer. All tracks were computed on a drum machine then he played over them. Nick Menza’s playing on RIP is just sick! Overall, I think AJFA had more influence on what was to come and who knows what it would have been if Cliff had been around, but from a pure musical and technical viewpoint… I’ll take RIP. What say you?

RIP just because AJFA has no bass. Could have been one of their best. It’s as thin as a sheet of notebook paper.

I do not even think either album is either bands best work tbh. I would much rather hear Ride the Lightning or Puppets in Metallica’s case or Youthanasia or Countdown for Megadeth. I have thought since it came out that Youthanasia was Megadeths best album ever.

Just for arguments sake though and comparing just these 2 albums I would take AJFA. Even with the problems with no bass I would still take AJFA because it is just a deeper album with more hit tracks on it. RIP is still a good album but AJFA has far more hit songs on it than RIP.

At the end of the day the music business is about bands trying to create as many hit songs as they can to sustain a long career. Even with no bass a person that randomly listens to Metallica can name you at least 3 songs off that album.

A bold take; I agree with you.

I’ve been a Metallica fan for over 30 years. The Justice record is the album I listen to least. My gripe is that the dynamics and the mood of the songs never changes. I doesn’t take the listener on a varied ride. A good bit of the songs are too long.

I am also a big supporter of Megadeth’s Youthanasia. It’s easily their most accessible album and offers a wide range of ideas, not just an hour of shredding.

Neither were peak to me. While AJFA is Metallica's most technical, the songwriting doesn't touch Puppets. And while Rust in Peace is legendary, I think Countdown is a better album. It flows perfectly and the production and mixing are top notch.

Metallica peaked with Master of Puppets.

Megadeth peaked with So Far, So Good...So What!

Slight edge to Metallica but I love them both.

Rust In Peace, and it's not close. Rust is a thrash masterpiece, Justice is not.

Adjusted for my own tastes. To the question, give me RIP.

Tough call

RIP is my favorite Megadeth (not really a big fan) but AFJA is probably my #3 for Metallica

Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls from a musicianship and song-writing journey crush anything from Justice unfortunately. One is still a masterpiece though and there are some underrated songs like Eye of Beholder, Dyers Eve, and To Live is to Die.

But as a whole I'll still take Justice simply because I don't have to hear Mustaine's voice

There is an argument to be made there. Cliff was amazing and his influence on the band is obvious. I think AJFA was MOP part 2 without Cliff. Between Master and Peace Sells, I’d definitely take Master any day and twice on Sunday.

That being said the bridge of Wake Up Dead is one of my favorite metal bass lines ever.

Yeah, I get that. He’s no Maynard.

Rust in Peace vs. Master of Puppets is the more apt comparison,

The winner? Man I don’t know.

I prefer Megadeth. But MOP is a metal classic.
