Another prominent grunge era figure is gone.

Rolling Stone

quote:

Mark Lanegan, the gruff-voiced singer who fronted Screaming Trees before embarking on a successful solo career, has died. A rep for the artist confirmed that the artist died at his home in Killarney, Ireland. “No other information is available at this time,” the publicist wrote. “The family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time.” Lanegan was 57.

bummer ... what a talent. His 90's solo work was incredible.

What sad news... I just read his book last year and he had an interesting life to say the least...

I was never a huge Trees fan... but his solo stuff has always been great... Bubblegum was my favorite!

This news sucks. Not many left from the good old grunge days.

Probably not where I would live but looks nice to visit though!

Pretty gutted about this and having not attended a post-Screaming Trees show of his. The last show I remember him even playing in TX was with Soulsavers in '09.

Here he is on Parts Unknown if you've never seen it (starting around 28:40):

I loved his work with QOTSA. Damn. How sad.

Hanging Tree is such a haunting song.

Damn…
Liked a couple of those Screaming Trees albums back in the day. Really enjoyed his work with Mad Season as well.

Side 1 of album “Sweet Oblivion,” Screaming Trees. That used to be a staple of Seattle radio back in the day. I’m surprised they didn’t hit higher. Being from dry side Ellensburg as opposed to wet Seattle gave them less cache with some.

Sweet Oblivion is my all-time favorite album. Amazing start to finish. And as another poster said, his solo stuff is excellent. Whiskey smooth vocals.

Just picked up his covid book this week. Read 1 chapter. Seems like he had a hell of a case. Wonder if damages (covid and otherwise) caught up or totally unrelated.

Loved his Gutter Twins project with Greg Dulli.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was covid related. I know he had a pretty brutal battle and was in and out of a coma. I'll have to check out his new book.

Weird if true.

Very few people have such a singular voice. Only saw the Screaming Trees once, in 1987 in a dive in Little Haiti in Miami and it was an amazing night.

I've always thought Buzz Factory was their catchiest record. If Subtle Poison had come out 3-4 years later with a major label production it could have been a smash hit.

Buzz Factory was an excellent album and I agree on Subtle Poison. I also feel the exact same way about this song off BF, too:

I've been mourning his passing by listening to his music every day. What an artist and vocalist he was.
