Agreed. Completely unlistenable. A few people praised it trying to be hip or edgy and everyone else followed so they wouldn't be seen as unhip.

Well, it’s an opinion. And everyone is entitled to have one. This one just happens to be incorrect.

The video not only makes me cry, but it also makes random Pakastani tribesman cry on reaction videos. So, on the "Do Pakistani Tribesman cy while watching this video" scale that I and most other discerning critics use, it's an S tier song/video.

Johnny Cash can't sing. Even in his prime. He talks.

That fits his style of music, but does not translate into other genres.

I won't say it sucks, but it's not something to celebrate.

you're getting major downvotes, as i'm sure i will too, but you're exactly right. Johnny Cash couldnt sing great and he couldnt play the guitar great and he couldnt write songs great. he was pretty average, if not below average, at those things.

but what Johnny Cash WAS good at, and why many people including me love him, was being Johnny Cash.

and i think his cover of Hurt fricking rules

If you take the record for what it is without knowing who Cash is, then yea, not the best. It's an old arse man singing. Clearly it won't be much of anything. As previously stated, the video pulls it together and knowing the story of his life/career helps.

"I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive."

It was the moving video, though, that made it all fall into place for the Nine Inch Nails star: "It really, really made sense and I thought what a powerful piece of art.

Prince's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" solo (we had a whole thread on that last year I think)

Most over rated solo ever.

Guitar players must disagree because I run into lots of them who give it a 10.

Question, are you a big fan of The Edge?

He's alright. I wouldn't put him in my top ten. But I do like U2 and he's pretty much responsible for 90% of their sound.

Agree with OP. Two things Johnny Cash did that I do not like: Hurt and Rusty Cage.

It is supposed to suck to young whipper snappers.

Cash's version of Hurt and Rusty Cage are that of an old, tired, man.

It's done nicely.

It's not meant to get you up to dance and twerk or cut yourself.

Sincerely,
Old fker.

Ok... I've tried to listen to the original three times now and can't make it through the cheap cassette tape sound in one setting. And I'm imaging it's the same as with people listening to Dylan or Neil Young where it helps to have been there (present) at the right time.

It 'hurts' my ears.

Maybe it's time for Trent needs to release it again with his now more experienced and advanced age?

Then I'd give it another listen.

Musical taste is all subjective so if you don't like something then you don't like it and that's fine, but I would argue that the cheap cassette sound is intentional and adds to the song rather than detracts from it. It's a paean to the complete isolation and loss of self-control brought on by heroin addiction. It isn't supposed to be pretty in a classical sense.
