As the Beatles moved on, you can tell John started focusing more on the rhythm of his lyrics rather than the singing. A lot of people say that this was due to him feeling self conscious about his voice. I think he developed a kind of singing-rap hybrid that Drake has made popular today. Come Together and I Am the Walrus are good examples of this. Anyone else see any merit to this argument?

ETA: Someone mentioned Give Peace a Chance as a good example too and that he was the inventor of the diss track.

Uh, no. The first pop hit with rap in it was Blondie's Rapture.

How Do You Sleep is a fricking awful song IMO but it was also a mainstream diss track of a former band member. Ice Cube’s diss of NWA reminds me of it.

I would say that Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, was the first hit song that used the quick lyrical/rhyme structure that became rap later on, but he wasn't the first either.

the lyrics are awful (and embarrassingly cringeworthy) but the music is world class. Ringo on the skins and one of George’s best ever guitar pieces

I saw a Beatles documentary where they talked about the different songwriting styles of Lennon vs. McCartney, and they keyed on this idea when comparing them.

Actually Ringo isn't on "How do You Sleep?". He declined to be a party to the dissing of Paul

Starr visited the studio during the recording of the song and was reportedly upset, saying: "That's enough, John."

I'm not sure, that is such a good comparison. Those are genius lyrics, and the rhythm of the rhyme, is a hellacious example of what complicity a writer can achieve.
The difference is though: one was made for a choreographed dance on stage, and the other type is for everybody else to dance.

John Lennon was a pinko liberal commie and his music sucked arse!! I really don't get peoples affinity for the beatles. I went through their entire catalog on amazon and every album had one or two songs that were salvageable... the rest are shite! Glad that fricker is dead...
