I've met Bob Dylan and his body guards. This gump couldn't get anywhere near it.

Isbell is probably my favorite artist right now. I love seeing that dude live, and I can't get enough of Southeastern as well as his older stuff.

That all being said, I wouldn't say he is the best ever singer/songwriter.

But hey, that's his opinion. My opinion on Dylan is that he was a hell of a writer, but I'd much rather hear Isbell sing.

Celine Deion is also a MUCH better singer than Dylan

She would annihilate him on a sing off on the voice

I like isbell's songs better than dylans. I know that's probably sacrilegious.

Lmao. Isbell is great but he hasn't jumped guys like Jim Croce, Willie, Kristopherson, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt to get near the rarified air of Bob frickin Dylan. I believe your gump is showing.

Once you admit that Townes is greater than Dylan you'll have it right

I love Isbell. My current favorite artist. He just doesn't have the library built up that some others do. He's a rare talent. He just needs to keep building from Southeastern. Which will be tough. It's one of the most immaculate albums I've ever heard, but it's only one album. His work with the 400 Unit on the previous record were really solid, but outside of Codeine, We've Met, and Alabama Pines, nothing was on the level of SE. Should be interesting to see how he follows it up. He could end up on that level if he can maintain SE level of songwriting.

If you compare them straight up he has.. the reason he hasn't in many people's minds is because music has changed so much and you don't hear him on the radio much at all, see him blasted in the media, etc. Those guys got serious radio air time, media pumping, awards, etc....

Look how many people in this thread know who Jason Isbell is, yet.... he has only made it to 23 in the billboard top 100 with Southeastern. Which is amazing to me considering he is doing it in a time when people like taylor swift, maroon 5, and songs like I'm all about that bass are the ones topping the charts. Which are songs those people didn't even fricking write.

Take him back and place him about 25-30 years ago and he would be competing with the best.

Paul Simon's songs were good, but they were mostly poppy and catchy. Kodachrome? It's just a catchy song, Me and Julio? Another catchy fun song. Hits like that could all be compared to today's pop songs. However, I do think sound of silence may be the best song ever.

As far as Neil Young and Bob Dylan go, you should really listen (and listen closely) to more Isbell songs if you haven't before calling me an idiot. If you are looking for a catchy song, then no... he's not your guy... if you are looking for poetry in music... he is by far one of the best...

I'm a lyrics person, so that's what really means a lot to me.

Have you ever heard a small town southern funeral for a fallen soldier depicted better than in Dress Blues

Lines like
quote:

Your wife said this all would be funny
when you came back home in a week.
You'd turn twenty-two and we'd celebrate you
in a bar or a tent by the creek.
Your baby would just about be here.
Your very last tour would be up
but you won't be back. They're all dressing in black
drinking sweet tea in styrofoam cups.

quote:

Now the high school gymnasium's ready,
full of flowers and old legionnaires.
Nobody showed up to protest,
just sniffle and stare.
But there's red, white, and blue in the rafters
and there's silent old men from the corps.
What did they say when they shipped you away
to fight somebody's Hollywood war?

That's just one song, I think I'll do some more.

Ah... see your problem is you don't know his older stuff as well. I'll agree Southeastern is his best album... but he had tons of really great songs before that.

The Blue, Decoration Day, God Damn Lonely Love, Dress Blues, Chicago Promenade, Hurricanes and Hand Grenades, In a Razor Town, Try, Seven mile island, sunstroke, no choice in the matter, soldiers get strange, streetlights, TVA.... I actually thought the Here we rest (codiene) album was his worst. you need to listen to the sirens of the ditch album and the jason isbell and the 400 unit album.

Isbell told me his favorite song he ever wrote was Danko/Manuel... but that was right before southeastern. LINK

ETA: shite, i forgot outfit.

I can admit that right now if we're talking about personal preference. I prefer Townes and probably Guy Clark to The Hebrew from Duluth. I'm not sure I can say they are/were better at the craft. Just the trifecta of Times are a Changing, Blowing in the Wind, and Like A Rolling Stone by themselves are more recognized, influential, and critically acclaimed than anything the others have done. But the debate here is how well tgey stack up to Alabama Pines.
